Today, we published the latest iteration of the Netflix culture memo. It’s been a year in the making, with many revisions and feedback (over 1,500 comments in fact), and reflects the values and principles we think best represent Netflix today. As head of talent, I’m often asked, why do we focus on culture so much? Because we want to ensure that anyone applying for a job here knows what motivates Netflix — and that all employees have a shared understanding of what we value most. Thank you for sharing the update on Netflix's culture memo. It's inspiring to see how Netflix continues to prioritize its values and adapt to maintain a high-performance culture. Revising the memo over the years and incorporating employee feedback demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement. The focus on "The Dream Team," "People over Process," "Uncomfortably Exciting," and "Great and Always Better" clearly highlights the company's priorities. Treating Netflix like a professional sports team emphasizes performance and excellence. The freedom from rigid policies on expenses and vacation, combined with a focus on autonomy, reflects the trust Netflix places in its employees and fosters innovation.

Pretty sure the only thing that motivated Netflix is line go up and subscribers go up. Hey remember when Netflix loved when people shared passwords? Idk how Netflix and YouTube software engineers sleep at night knowingly implementing blatantly anti consumer features like location tracking and YouTubes infamous anti ad block features like trying to fry my processor but I guess it's just constantly telling yourself at least you have a great culture!

I cannot stop admiring reading about the unique culture of the company and its commitment to creating an environment where talented people can flourish. However, Netflix emphasizes inculcating an internal culture focusing on high performance and autonomy. The only thing that appears to be lagging is values related to customer interaction and support. 🥲 Reports of the support team being rude (my personal experience was not so great, either) raise questions about whether an internal focus on excellence extends to treating clients. Shouldn’t a company aiming to entertain the world also prioritize outstanding customer service that ensures a positive experience for all users?

A great read and I couldn’t agree more that a business should always prioritise a dream team rather than a ‘family’. I love mine dearly, but (apologies to you all if you read this) wouldn’t choose to work with them in my career. “Uncomfortably Exciting” is always something that gets taken for granted. Companies focus on legacy instead of striving to always be curious. If you’re not constantly learning, it not only becomes boring, but you’ll fall behind. It’s something to be admired. More businesses should take inspiration from Netflix and produce realistic honest Culture Memos like this. 👏👏👏
