I first got to know Carl Baptista over a decade ago when I was in NEA. He has been a tireless advocate of using medical-grade maggots (larvae) of the Cuprina blowfly to remove necrotic tissue from diabetic wounds in order to speed up wound healing and avoid amputation. Maggot therapy has been used for centuries. What Carl (and his company Cuprina Wound Care Solutions) has done is to turn it into a properly certified and regulated medical technology solution. A solution I believe that is useful globally. Glad to see maggot therapy is now accepted in hospitals in Singapore. Diabetes is a growing problem all over the world. Every limb that can be saved from amputation because of maggot therapy is a massive win for patients and their families. But Carl has far more interests than just maggot therapy. Over the years, I have interacted with him on subjects as diverse as breeding tropical stingless bees for honey. Yes, there really are such things as stingless bees in Singapore. See for example the Smooth-headed Stingless Bee (Tetragonula laeviceps) - https://lnkd.in/gGjetgf9 I tried years ago to have such stingless bee apiaries set up in JTC and HDB estates to educate the public that: (1) bees are not inherently dangerous and if you have to, please remove and not exterminate them; (2) we can produce honey from stingless bees (https://lnkd.in/gSkj9aBm). I still hope these ideas can be explored. Sustainability is more than just zero-carbon. It's also about restoring biodiversity. A City in Nature has to recognise that humans are a part of nature and not apart from nature. Carl's latest innovation is to use blowflies in lieu of bees for pollination in indoor strawberry farms.
