📣 You can register until Friday 17 January for Studying Governance: Questions, Designs, and Methodologies (5EC)! 📆 10-14 February 2025 📍 Utrecht School of Governance 👩🏫 Merlijn van Hulst, Dimiter Toshkov and Barbara Vis ➡ Register here: https://lnkd.in/eXgNTAkH Studying Governance: Questions, Designs, and Methodologies is an important part of the NIG curriculum. It explores general issues of research design in public administration and political science. It engages with some fundamental epistemological and methodological questions from multiple perspectives, as well as with more practical issues related to the formulation of a research question, the choice of research approach, and the development of the elements of the research plan. We will discuss how different methodological assumptions underlying research are manifested in designing research projects and in analyzing and presenting the data collected in the context of this design. In particular, we will cover the construction of research questions; the selection of research goals; the fit between goals, questions and research design; the selection of cases or sites to research and evidence to collect; and strategies for enhancing the trustworthiness (e.g., reliability, validity, credibility) and relevance (generalizability, practical significance, and scientific contribution) of research projects.

I am pleased to announce the publication of my latest article entitled "Regional Governance Challenges in Implementing EU Smart Specialization Policy: A Critical Review" in the European Journal of Geography (EJG). This article examines the governance challenges associated with Smart Specialization, a regional research and innovation policy initiated by the European Union and implemented across EU regions and member states. I argue that establishing a governance framework that facilitates multi-level coordination and cooperation, particularly in engaging stakeholders (innovation actors) and ensuring institutional readiness, is a major challenge. This problem is evident not only in developed regions but is even more pronounced in less developed regions. I would like to thank Prof. Tamás Sebestyén, PhD, Head of the Department of Economics and Econometrics and Research Director at University of Pécs Faculty of Business and Economics - University of Pécs, as well as the financial support from NRDIO - National Research Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH) in Hungary for their support in the publication of this work. The paper can be accessed at: https://lnkd.in/ddkZcdsY

𝗣𝗵𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 4-6 November 2024, Eva Wolf, Mark van Ostaijen and myself will give a 3 day course on Critical and Interpretive Public Administration via the Netherlands Institute of Governance NIG (with contributions from Tamara Metze, John Boswell and Lars Dorren)! 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 As an alternative to more instrumental approaches, critical and interpretive approaches in public administration research address issues of power and domination (critical) next to sensemaking, values, meaning-making and improvisation (interpretive). The aim of this 3-day course is explore and discuss key insights from critical and interpretive studies in Public Administration research, and how this could inform or relate to your own research project. By focusing on key concepts and debates, the course provides a reflexive space for (young) scholars committed to deepen their understanding of critical and interpretive research. The course is not only meant for those who want to do critical or interpretive research, but also for those who are interested in the philosophies and practices underlying such research and – possibly – exploring how to incorporate these in their own research projects. CALL FOR PAPERS – Practitioner seminar. December 6th, 2024 – deadline for submission of papers. The next Practitioner Seminar will be held on February 6th, 2025. We are planning a one-day in person event at Blackrock, Drapers Gardens 12, Throgmorton Avenue, London EC2N 2DL. Submission materials If you are interested in presenting, please send your abstract/summary and, if possible, supporting materials (e.g., paper or presentation) no later than 6 December, 2024, to practitioner.lead@inquire.org.uk. Early submissions are strongly encouraged. One or two external practitioners have also expressed an interest, but members will have priority. Guidelines for speakers The criteria to be applied in selecting papers are as follows: Innovation and academic rigor are good but "so what?" is crucial. The focus of the presentation should be on the practical relevance of the results rather than on the methodology itself. Existence of a paper (in due course if not now) is good, but only slides, or equivalent, are essential. These will be needed 10 days before the seminar for copying etc. However, the more detail on the presentation that can be provided, the better the chance that it will be selected. Presentations must not, under any circumstances, be sales pitches. Some of the more analytical papers will have an academic discussant (as we had at the last seminar). However, we would also encourage the submission of more general practitioner-oriented papers. If you have any questions please contact - stephanie.york@inquire.org.uk or practitioner.lead@inquire.org.uk.

Call for Papers: Academic Symposium on Reimagining Contracts for Evolving Supply Chains Date: 3rd – 4th December 2024 Organized by: WorldCC Foundation The WorldCC Foundation invites submissions for the upcoming Academic Symposium, a platform dedicated to exploring the dynamic interplay between contracts and supply chain networks. This event aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry, fostering a collaborative environment where scholars and practitioners can share insights and identify new research opportunities. Supply chains are currently under significant stress, making the security of supply a top priority for organizations. Contracts and the contracting process are crucial in shaping and maintaining these complex networks and relationships. In response to market uncertainty and volatility, it is essential to explore how these contracts must adapt and evolve. This symposium will address key questions about the connection between contracting and supply chain management, focusing on the necessary changes to ensure stability and resilience in an unpredictable market environment. Please submit a 250-word abstract describing your proposed presentation no later than October 21, 2024, to Ananya Prem Nath at anath@worldcc.com. Accepted abstracts will be made available online to the conference delegates and the authors will be invited to provide a high- level summary of their paper or thoughts on Day One (3rd December) of our Academic Symposium, where presentations will receive feedback. Selected papers will be considered for inclusion in a special edition published in our prestigious international journal “International Journal of Commerce & Contracting.”
