I gave a tech talk at Berlin #GeoMob yesterday about how WebAssembly enables a new generation of powerful, intuitive, and accessible geospatial tools. Here are my key points: - People are most familiar with and drawn to 'Direct Manipulation Interfaces' - the ability to click or drag an object on screen and get immediate feedback. Think pinch-to-zoom on an iPhone. - For Direct Manipulation to work, you need to show results to your user within 100ms. - If you're building a geospatial tool in the browser, most of the time you will offload processing to a backend server, because most geospatial libraries can't run on the frontend. - However, it's almost impossible to return results to the user within 100ms from a backend server. Especially if there is a significant distance between the user and the server. - With WebAssembly, geospatial applications are no longer tied a client-server model! This opens up a whole new world of geospatial tools which are powerful, intuitive, and accessible. Honeycomb Maps is built on many of the ideas discussed in my talk. If you're a logistics or last-mile delivery company interested in intuitive geospatial optimization, feel free to get in touch!
