“There’s an app for that.” Does anyone else remember this phrase / mindset in the early 2010s? Wow I feel old asking that, but it feels like we are reliving that experience with generative AI. Fraud detection and automated intervention? There’s an AI for that. Want to scale your content marketing? There’s an AI for that. Customized chat bot that’s based on your database of proprietary info? There’s an AI for that? Want to disrupt any established market? Someone will probably be able to pitch you an AI for that. Much like the great app proliferation of the 2010s, or Bitcoin / blockchain proliferation of the 2015s, the great AI proliferation of the 2020s will see another gold rush and ultimately another bubble. Generative AI is the latest main wave in the tsunami of AI that will bring a bubble. After or as the bubble bursts, the next wave will appear. Now is the time to start preparing and positioning for the next wave. Get ready. There’s a lot of focus on the technical aspects of AI and while important for PMs, what will be more important is ensuring strategic prioritization around AI. Sharing this MIT Sloan article which is a very simple yet powerful and elegant way of looking at when and how to use Gen AI. Disclaimer, the rest of the post is not about Gen AI!! As I read through this article and reflected on my personal experience of working in the biopharma industry especially the last close to 13 years (of the close to 23 years), this article’s approach can be used across any technology. Personally, for me the technology explosion started in early 2010s with the advent of the term, “Big Data” immediately followed by the “SMAC” stack (I am sure some of you are smiling now!) to then be rapidly followed by re-emergence of AI (AI has been in pharma especially research for a very long time), AR/VR/MR, Blockchain, Quantum Computing leading up to Gen AI recently (my apologies to any technology I may have missed inadvertently in this spectrum!). I remember my starting statement in the very first big data workshop way back in 2011-12 for a top 10 pharma, “Technology is moving from being an enabler to a business model disrupter and business growth driver” and that statement could not be more truer today and the implication more critical. Every technology can solve a host of problems, but what should it really solve, what business impact will it have and what business metrics will it drive are more important questions to address. If the answer to this question is not convincing then not doing anything right now with that technology is the best solution but you would have done the right analysis! Another AI-themed article for you to consider. This is a hot topic for me right now. As companies look ahead to 2024 and beyond, I'm seeing so many leaders get distracted by the tools themselves (like AI), and the tactics they feel "behind" in using. The cost: they're losing focus on the changing customer needs they will be expected to satisfy in the next 2-5 years. Now, I'm not saying AI shouldn't factor into your plans. But first you need to determine which customer needs and opportunities are most important. Otherwise, you're at risk of acquiring oversized AI solutions to underwhelming customer problems. It's crucial that you invest the time to better understand your customer, and the experiences/challenges they will face in the near future. Then think about how solutions will need to evolve to keep up. THEN work with advisors and consultants (🙋♀️) to understand how AI might help you meet those objectives - to SHAPE the future, not chase it. This is a great reminder: "[F]ive years ago everything was blockchain, and then everything was crypto, and then we cycled back to blockchain again, then web3, then metaverse. And now here we are with AI business that has become capricious and fickle. 𝗦𝗼 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀. If you don’t dedicate yourself to maintaining focus, and if you do not have data-driven scenarios which help you create a vision for a plausible future, it’s going to be very hard for you to manage, and there’s a high probability that you’re going to get dragged into somebody else’s idea of what the future ought to look like. The good news is, we have autonomy. The future doesn’t just show up—you have to insert yourself and take actions based on real-world practical information."

The AI hype cycle is driving adoption before the user needs are validated. Finding product/market fit has changed, but building your AI-native product may still be needed to prove the demand. It's important to note that companies are often under pressure to develop an 'AI strategy', similar to past trends like needing a 'mobile strategy' or 'blockchain strategy'. However, It's crucial to avoid adopting AI without a clear product/market fit, as this can lead to potential risks and challenges. Ex: MSFT is marketing the idea of an "AI copilot" to enterprises from very early on, but it may be too early to determine if there is real demand for this type of AI-assisted interface. Before selling AI tools to companies, it's advisable to gain a deep understanding of the use case. This will help in making informed decisions and avoid investing in tools that may not be needed or wanted. We are entering a phase where the core issue is that the hype around "having an AI strategy" is outpacing the identification of clear use cases that provide significant value to users/customers.
