Today is #worldwaterday and the theme is 'Peace'. Water-related disasters have dominated the list of disasters over the past 50 years and account for 70 per cent of all deaths related to natural disasters (World Bank, 2022). This World Water Day, we all need to unite around water and use water for peace, laying the foundations of a more stable and prosperous tomorrow. #peace #waterday

Climate change 🌍 is alerting us more and more every day. It might be the most important thing we should focus on for a better and sustainable future. It affects agriculture, pollution, health, and everything else that matters to us. More than 5 million people in #NorthwestSyria already live under severe conditions. #ClimateChange worsens the situation. Not only its direct effects but also indirect effects as shown in this video by The New Humanitarian. We should be a part of #ClimateAction, not just for today, but for our children and future 🌱. #linkedingrowth #linkedin #syria #ngos #ingos #humanitarian #environment #idlib https://lnkd.in/dyFFgJy3

Kudos to Ethiopian Red Cross society for demonstrating proactive and impactful efforts by activating anticipatory action protocols for drought prevention in Ethiopia. Anticipatory action is built upon three main pillars: identifying triggers and parameters for action, establishing pre-agreed activities, and securing pre-committed financing. It's important to note that 20% of today's humanitarian crises are highly predictable, yet only less than 1% of the financing for these crises is pre-arranged. Asia's most powerful storm🌪️ this year, #TyphoonYagi, has claimed 59 lives in northern Vietnam according to news reports. Landslides and flooding continue to threaten communities. In addition to the heartbreaking loss of life, Typhoon Yagi has severely impacted infrastructure, leaving many regions grappling with the devastation. Roads have been rendered impassable due to landslides, while families are displaced and in urgent need of shelter and sustenance. This will impact humanitarian emergency response from local and international organisations. 💡 In light of this, drawing from past experiences like Cyclone Idai and Hurricane Matthew, we know that coordination, community engagement, and rapid assessments are key to better humanitarian action outcomes. 🔍 Read our lessons paper on "Adapting humanitarian action to the effects of climate change" to learn more about how we can improve our responses and be better prepared for future challenges: https://bit.ly/3MFJbbk The Lessons Paper covers general lessons on humanitarian action and climate change, lessons on imperfectly understood disasters, and lessons from new weather events. #withlearningcomeschange

UN’s World Water Day 2024 key takeaways: 📌 Water can create peace or spark conflict. 📌 Prosperity and peace rely on water. 📌 Water can lead us out of crisis. Let's use this opportunity to turn water from a potential source of conflict into peace and cooperation. The El Niño phenomenon is devastating East Africa, causing massive displacements and loss of lives. The forecast for May-July 2024 predicts wetter-than-usual conditions in Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Uganda, Western and Coastal Kenya, Burundi, and Rwanda. These countries are already grappling with ongoing climate crisis effects, including drought, conflict, and global economic instability. World Vision has been responding to floods in Kenya since December and is currently mobilizing resources in various countries. #ispot Highlighting the increase in weather-related natural disasters in Africa The African Risk Capacity (ARC) has published a white paper examining the state of natural disasters in Africa. The paper titled “The State of Natural Disasters in Africa”, sheds light on a growing concern: the increased frequency of weather-related natural disasters and their devastating economic impact on the continent. Over the last decade, the frequency of disasters has steadily increased, rising from 32 incidents in 2014 to 56 occurrences in 2023, mainly due to floods, in 29 African countries where data is available. It is estimated that African governments spent $2.2 billion managing weather-related natural disasters in 2023, with approximately 25% attributable to Libya, which accounts for over 0.5% of Libya’s GDP. 🌍 By 2030, up to 118 million extremely poor people in Africa could face the devastating impacts of drought, floods, and extreme heat if urgent action isn't taken. This would severely strain poverty alleviation efforts, hinder economic growth – and worsen the poverty-disaster spiral. To save lives and livelihoods, African nations must prioritize investment in forecasting capacity and accelerate implementation of #EarlyWarningsForAll. These steps are essential to mitigate disaster risks, build resilience, and guide truly sustainable development, according to the World Meteorological Organization's newly launched State of the Climate in Africa 2023 report. 📊 ➡️https://ow.ly/eHyT50Tcl6Y
