Why Construction Laborers are Valuable to the Construction Industry? Construction laborers are valuable to the construction industry. They use numerous skills as they move between many varying tasks with equal ability. Further, they follow detailed instructions as well as problem solve for themselves. This unique combination of skill, knowledge and decision making requires considerable technical and mental skills. Flexible work schedules are often necessary due to the varying lengths and locations of jobs. A laborer may be paving a highway for weeks in one county, then working only a few days on a masonry project in another county. The unpredictability of each project can be both frustrating and exciting. While some laborers may specialize in one type of work such as environmental remediation, often it is difficult to rely on just that one work classification to provide steady work. Cross training, therefore, is a way to become more “marketable” for future jobs, and it provides experience and skills necessary to stay on jobs longer. Many laborers because of their ability, versatility, and productivity in performing their work tasks, have been asked by their project supervisor or foreman to move on to the contractor’s next project #careeradvice #constructioncareers #constructionapprenticeship #apprenticeship #careers #tradeschool #trades #laborunion #education #kansascity #kansascityconstrction #constructioncontractor #contractor #kansascitycontractor #kansas #missouri #beltonmo #belton #kcmo

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been working on a quite a few Graduate roles for Engineers, Managers and Surveyors. After speaking to a lot of young construction people about to go out on the world of work, I thought I would give you a run down of some dos and don’ts…. ✅ DO have the right attitude. Companies will always favour people who have the right attitude and work ethic, willing to learn and push themselves out of their comfort zone over qualifications ✅ DO get experience - try and do a sandwich placement or any sort of industry work experience - it will really make you stand out ✅ DO follow up with your recruiter about your application - it demonstrates you are keen on the role ✅ DO get your CSCS card where possible ✅ DO include written references on your CV - again, this will really make your application stand out ❌ Don’t be completely money driven and miss out on great opportunities because you have an unrealistic figure in mind. You are just starting out in the industry - the money will come. ❌ Don’t be unwilling to try new things and be extremely particular about roles when you have zero experience - it’s all a learning curve! One of the main things I’ve noticed with the majority of applications is that people don’t want to graft! The ones that have really stood out to me are people who are focused on gaining as much experience as possible, and putting themselves out there. Its all about attitude, if you are willing to put the work in, you will go far! Hope this helps🎓✅ Buildforce Solutions #constructionjobs #graduatejobs #loveconstruction #construction #constructionindustry

When I was in year 9, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and like many, I fell into the world of construction. Yesterday morning I did a Year 9 Careers morning at a school in Newcastle , and it was interesting hearing what these young people wanted life to look like after school. I spoke to 30 students, and here are the results - 18 - Football Career (Includes Coaching) 2 - Engineers 2 - Dancers 1 - Professional Golfer 1 - Musician 1 - Air Hostess 1 - Electrician 1 - Vet 1 - Midwife 1 - Police Officer 1 - Lawyer To give some context, 22 of the 30 Students were boys, and a whopping 83% of them wanted a career in Football, while a mere 10% wanted a career in construction. Now obviously this is a small sample , but It highlights in a small way that construction is still a fall back on career. I know John Cartwright has done a lot of work on this and his input here could be of interest. Maybe I’m overlooking the fact that 13 & 14 year olds are way to young to decide , or maybe , just maybe , there is still a lot of work to be done to make construction a desirable career. #careersinconstruction #STEM

Landscaping or Construction? A Guide to Making the Right Career Choice

Each year the construction industry invests millions of dollars and thousands of training hours to address safety issues from fall protection to personal protective equipment. Adversely, the construction industry is one of the leading industries in two areas: death by accidental overdose and death by suicide. A statistic that none of us should be proud of. So I propose this question: Where is the investment in emotional fall protection? Imagine if we invested in helping members with mental health issues at the same level as safety classes during and post-apprenticeship. With emotional fall protection comes real change in the culture of construction. We need to move away from myths and rituals and embrace real cultural change when it comes to addressing mental health issues on the jobsite.
