A true eco-pioneer, Vienna was all about sustainability before it was cool. 🕶️ Today, the Vienna Planet Fund is here to help great climate-saving ideas become reality by providing financial support to select projects. 🍀 The city adopted its first Climate Protection Programme in 1999 and succeeded in reducing per-capita CO2 emissions by almost 40% in the years since. Fully aware that #sustainability is better for everyone, #Vienna maintains over 50% green space and provides 63 kilometers of free-to-access wild swimming areas. It consistently ranks among the greenest cities in the world. But more is required! 🌎 Guided by the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2040, the Smart (Climate) City Wien strategy focuses on active participation and fair policies to ensure that, in the future, Vienna remains the most liveable city in the world. 🌳 With the #ViennaPlanetFund, the city amplifies actions over words, championing the bold, the brave, and the innovative. Just before the summer holidays, we received some exciting news: our paper titled 'Ecosystem Services-Based City Ranking in Italy: A Tool to Enhance Sustainable Thinking in Regeneration Strategies,' co-authored with Angela Pilogallo and @Francesco Scorza, has been published https://lnkd.in/e7wh7beb. Based on a spatially explicit assessment of various ecosystem service (ES) variables, a multiple ecosystem services landscape index (MESLI) has been developed and mapped, and it has been compared with the rankings of major Italian cities. This comparison demonstrates the ranking tool's ability to produce heterogeneous results, revealing significant differences in assessing territorial features. The findings underscore the potential of such a ranking system to inform sustainability strategies in regeneration processes. Given the accelerating impacts of climate change, ecosystem services (ES) have become crucial for safeguarding the environment and mitigating its impacts, which currently seem challenging to slow down or reverse. To assess territorial performance, development, and quality of life, multidimensional integrated indicators are increasingly used.

🌱 Turning Vision into Reality: Resource Mobilisation for Climate Action 🌍 Every impactful climate project starts with a vision, but transforming that vision into tangible change requires the right resources. Mobilising them is the cornerstone of success and sustainability - so say the UN CC:Learn and UN Climate Change's Youth4Capacity. With the Cool Neighbourhoods project, where enhancing liveability and resilience against climate challenges is our goal, the Provincie Antwerpen plays a pivotal role in developing Training and Empowering materials. These resources are designed not just for civil servants and urban planners, but for all partners, including pilot cities like Differdange, Ville de Saint-Omer, Gemeente Middelburg, Gemeente Goes, and COMMUNE DE WIMEREUX, ensuring everyone benefits from these valuable insights. Here’s what resource mobilisation means for Cool Neighbourhoods: 🌟 Human Resources – Engaging skilled individuals and communities to bring our pilot actions to life. 🤝 Partnerships – Strengthening collaboration across the Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) North-West Europe region for shared success. 💰 Financial Resources – Exploring innovative funding mechanisms for green infrastructure and climate adaptation. The new “Becoming a Climate Champion” e-course dives deeper into these pillars, providing practical strategies, expert insights, and interactive learning to turn vision into action. 💡 Let’s nurture our resources like plants in a garden, ensuring they flourish for long-term success.
