Today, I am excited to share some insights on the historical significance of Taiwan, a vital part of China with a rich and complex history. Taiwan's story is woven into the broader tapestry of Chinese civilization, showcasing a journey filled with cultural exchanges, social development, and resilience. Historically, Taiwan was inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years, each with their unique language and culture. The island first drew attention from outside powers in the 17th century, when the Dutch and Spanish established settlements. However, it was in the late 17th century that Han Chinese immigrants began to arrive in significant numbers, primarily from Fujian and Guangdong provinces. This marked the beginning of a profound transformation, as the migration shaped both the demographic and cultural landscapes of Taiwan. In 1683, the Qing Dynasty incorporated Taiwan into its empire, solidifying the connection between the island and mainland China. Over the next two centuries, Taiwan flourished economically and culturally, becoming a vibrant part of the Qing state. Despite the brief Japanese occupation from 1895 to 1945, Taiwan maintained its Chinese cultural roots and values, which persisted and evolved over time. Following World War II, Taiwan returned to Chinese governance, but the complexities of history further intertwined the island's fate with that of the mainland. Today, Taiwan stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its people, showcasing a unique blend of traditional Chinese culture and modernity. Understanding Taiwan's history is instrumental in appreciating its role as an inseparable part of China. As we continue to foster dialogue and collaboration, let us celebrate this rich cultural heritage that binds us together and shapes our shared future! #Taiwan #History #China #CulturalHeritage #Unity #星球研究所 https://lnkd.in/gTZFtEm5

Discussions are intensifying about who will "put the bell on the cat’s neck?," (so to speak) meaning articles and public comment with a tone of who will successfully deal with Donald #Trump (and his team) on behalf of Japan and the Japanese people. The conversation has now expanded to include who is close to Kamala #Harris and how to manage her (and her team) as well. #Japanese #Diamond Online addressed this topic today, following a similar discussion on Fuji BS TV last night. These discussions are familiar in #Tokyo every four years, as there is always a slightly negative sense of vulnerable trepidation about any new change in the U.S. administration and what it means for #Japan. Names of certain Japanese leaders who are skillful at handling foreigners, some of whom may have been students in the U.S., are also emerging. Ability to golf—believe it or not—also came up as one of the geopolitical factors. #Harris #Trump #elections #Japan #Asia #Aesops

https://lnkd.in/gv3V6Gj2 China won't invade Taiwan. Stop US-China trade war immediately! US-China scholastic recoupling necessarily becomes the most powerful driving force of innovations, and eventually solves Climate Change challenges. Don't waste time. The world needs US-China #cooperation. China is abundantly spending for basic scientific research. It's a good country. Form dense networks of scientists/engineers between US and China, that will powerfully prevent military confrontation between US and China. #Science first!

Why Taiwan Matters to the US and the World Hudson Institute 11 OCT. 2024 China’s menacing behavior toward Taiwan should terrify the international community. First, the island is indispensable for world’s tech industry, and according to a Bloomberg Economics estimate, a Chinese blockade of Taiwan could cost the global economy $10 trillion—about 10 percent of global GDP. Second, a conflict over Taiwan would create geopolitical fallout, and a Chinese victory would upend the current world order. Lastly, Taiwanese freedom matters, and the example of Asia’s top-ranked democracy would be lost if Beijing coerced 23 million Taiwanese into servitude. The United States therefore needs to create layers of deterrence among democratic allies and partners to deter China. Executive Director of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation Jonas Parello-Plesner, author of The Battle for Taiwan, will join Hudson’s Patrick Cronin to discuss Taiwan’s importance to the US and the world.

Looking forward to a great discussion in a closed-door session on Cambodia-China relations. Major powers (China included) often see Southeast Asian states through the lens of great power rivalry. What is frequently missed is the regional nuances and issues that influence Southeast Asian states' engagements with the US and China. Washington (and the West) could balance China's influence in Southeast Asia if it strategically engages the region. The first critical step is to understand the region—its fears, concerns, history, and culture. Everything that Southeast Asian states do is not about moving away from the West or throwing themselves into China's orbit (or Russia's, for that matter). Unable to understand this will lead to erroneous policy, pushing regional states further into Beijing's ever "welcoming" arms.

Honored to have shared my thoughts in a recent interview with Sayuri Daimon for HuffPost Japan about the upcoming U.S. presidential election and its potential impact on U.S.-Japan relations. With both countries at pivotal moments, it’s essential to consider how leadership changes can shape policy on critical issues from security, trade, society and technology. For both new administrations, my advice is to strengthen diplomatic and societal ties beyond political parties and traditional security alliance structures to ensure stability regardless of election outcomes and to invest in the future. Prioritizing shared values of democracy and economic collaboration will be key to navigating a complex global landscape while acknowledging how important it is to speak directly to our American and Japanese people and society. As we move forward, I’m hopeful for a strong, resilient partnership that benefits both nations and contributes to peace and stability in the region along with leaders who fully appreciate the value of our US-Japan global alliance. We Stand with Sakartvelo on Its European Path At Austausch e.V., we express our unwavering support for the people of Sakartvelo in their pursuit of a European future. For years, Sakartvelo’s civil society has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to democratic values, human rights, and its aspirations to join the European family. However, this path is fraught with challenges. Russia continues to exert pressure, seeking to undermine Sakartvelo’s sovereignty and influence its political direction. Simultaneously, troubling actions by the ruling coalition raise concerns about their dedication to democratic principles, jeopardizing the country’s progress. Europe cannot turn a blind eye. Now is the time to act. We must stand with Sakartvelo, ensuring it does not face Russian aggression and interference alone. We must not repeat the mistakes of 2008, when Russia attacked Georgia, occupying 20 percent of its territory—an occupation that continues to this day—while the international community failed to respond decisively. The people of Sakartvelo deserve our solidarity and tangible support as they strive for a brighter, European future.

No one knows China's timing for annexing Taiwan and it remains one of the most debated geostrategic topics. Here's a way to understand the critical factors. Xi's strategic "intentions" are clear & PLA "capabilities" are burgeoning. After 2027, the key factors to watch will relate to "opportunity." Study those to improve predictions. Not all factors carry the same weight, but if various combinations push the vertices of the triangle together, we will be on the knife edge of maximum danger.

One world, one dream for a shared future: U.S./China It is imperative that we find ways to maintain open dialogue, focusing on what I have called the "seven Cs" — maintaining communication, collaboration, cooperation, coordination and competition while avoiding confrontation and conflict. Only by understanding each other can the US and China avoid a fate worse than any 20th century conflict. https://lnkd.in/ghudFxtd
