The 2020s are regarded as a decade of significant development for both employees and employers, particularly regarding skill enhancement and career advancement. Studies indicate that the digital transformation will generate 97 million new roles. Moreover, employers anticipate that 44% of employees' skills will become outdated within the next five years and 60% of the workforce will require training by 2027. Therefore, it is unsurprising that businesses need to invest in a holistic approach to upskilling and reskilling their workforce to prepare for AI-driven and purpose-oriented roles. Companies must ensure that their employees remain competitive, agile, and capable of driving innovation. One way to achieve this is by developing pathway tools that help employees visualize their potential growth within the organization and identify the skills underpinning their advancement. However, the initial step in this process is to clearly understand the importance of fostering a purpose-driven culture within the organization. This endeavour begins with recruiting and developing leaders who not only acknowledge the critical importance of such a culture but are also committed to embedding it throughout the company. All points are important but here are 3 that we have recently been talking about a great deal at Lexonis: Sponsorship from leadership - it doesn't whether its AI, shiny new software from the latest start-up vendor or the best skills ontology or taxonomy in the world, if you don't have or you don't know how to get sponsorship from your leadership team, your project is going to fail. FULL STOP. Alignment with business needs - this pretty much merges with the first point. Why are you doing skills? At Lexonis we say 'start with the end in mind'; what are the business challenges that you are looking to address? Get those right and you are more likely to get sponsorship from your leadership team. Particularly when you demonstrate the direct impact on your organization's performance metrics. Transforming how things work in organisations is a big job, and even though it brings lots of opportunities, there can be challenges when people are involved. Sometimes, employees might not like the changes or feel worried about their jobs which I’m sure has happened to most people at some point in their careers. Business leaders have long walked a talent tightrope—carefully balancing budgets while retaining key people. To make sure everything goes smoothly, leaders need to be clear and involve people in the process at the right time. It's important to talk openly about the changes and show how they can make a positive difference. Keeping talented people and finding new ones can be tricky, especially when other organisations are also looking for similarly skilled workers. Today this very much needs to focus more on matching top talent to the highest-value roles. McKinsey research shows that, in many organisations, between 20 and 30 percent of critical roles aren’t filled by the most appropriate people. As we adopt new ways of doing things, making sure everyone has the right skills is crucial. This means identifying what skills are needed, providing the right training, and encouraging everyone to keep learning. By facing these challenges directly, organisations have a better chance to change successfully, making things better for everyone involved.
