Don’t make the same mistake that I made when I moved into my first supervisory role. As a Candidate Engineer, my first legal appointment in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act was as a Production Foreman, responsible for the Section Belts (AKA the veins of a mine). I was responsible for the construction, maintenance and legal compliance of section belts. When I came in, the regulatory and housekeeping standards were dismal, and downtime was high. Something that I wish I prioritized earlier on in my role was to spend time with the team while doing typical jobs, such as a belt extension, construction of a new conveyor drive, programming a control panel, etc., to get a better appreciation and understanding of WHAT they do, HOW they do it, WHY they do it, WHEN they do it, and WHAT the challenges are. I am happy to say that I eventually ‘got it’. And within a few months, we successfully reduced belt downtime from 46 min/shift to the Operations Excellence (OE) target of 11 min/shift, consistently. However, if I fully understood what actually happens on the ground, we could have reached our objectives sooner, with less pain. I’ve remembered the lesson with each career move. When I move to a new space, I make a point to spend time at the ‘coal face’. Because if you really want unvarnished truth on what is broken, speak to the person on the ground. What are Bolt Torquing & Bolt Tensioning? Firstly, I would like to say that I feel so glad to share this knowledge because I have noticed that both concepts are still not clear for few Mechanical technicians. So, here is the answer: Bolt Torquing and Bolt Tensioning are both effective ways of sealing a joint. While Bolt Torquing exerts a rotational force on the fastener (nut), Bolt Tensioning involves stretching the fastener (bolt). In other words, Bolt Torquing is a measurement of the twisting force required to spin the nut up along the threads of a Bolt, whereas Bolt Tensioning is the stretching or alongation of a Bolt that provides the clamping force of a joint. However, Either torquing and Tensioning, both use different processes to accomplish one only action, which is to put Mechanical joints together. Thanks for your attention 🙏

We understand the chaos of construction work. Machines look sturdy, but they are susceptible to rain, operator misuse, falling debris, and others. Machine downtime is almost inevitable in every job site, so addressing downtime as fast as possible is a priority for us. 💯 Here, we had to use a crane truck to pull a heavy telehandler out of mud after hours of heavy rain in Houston. It took an entire team to pull the machine off, but we managed to do it pretty fast, and the machine was undamaged.
