🤔 What is the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change? 🤔 To contribute to the implementation of the EU Adaptation Strategy, the European Commission launched the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change. The EU Mission focuses on supporting the EU regions, cities and local authorities to better understand the climate risks they are and will be confronted with in the future. In addition, it aims to develop their pathways to be better prepared and cope with the changing climate, and to test and deploy on the ground innovation solutions needed to build resilience. The EU Mission will support more than 150 European regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030, by supporting research and innovation, sharing knowledge and best practices, engaging citizens in the development of the adaptation policy. This may be a niche post but I really think that the 2012 COAG agreement on climate adaptation that names local and state government as the ones actually delivering climate adaptation should be re-evaluated. Since 2012 we've had multiple major IPCC reports, Black Summer and the 10 hottest years on record! As the finishing touches are being put on the National Adaptation Plan, I think it's time to re-think the 2012 agreement and Commonwealth responsibilities, and to make sure that there are timelines and targets that mean we can measure progress against these important strategies. https://lnkd.in/g2QMCNzj

SBC and the Climate Leaders Coalition welcome today’s announcement from Government around a bipartisan inquiry into an enduring climate adaptation framework for New Zealand. “This announcement is consistent with the recommendations we have made in our pre-election policy priorities paper, specifically relating to a multi-party approach to developing an enduring climate adaptation framework for New Zealand," says SBC Executive Director Mike Burrell. "Such a framework will be essential to give certainty to both government and the private sector to make the investments and large-scale changes necessary to adapt to a changing climate." Next year is an important milestone year for global climate action. Some reflections from my colleage Juan Pablo Hoffmaister on the upcoming national climate plans and what we need to enable effectiveness and impact
As we gear up for the crucial 2025-2030 cycle to update national climate plans under the Paris Agreement, there's a vital opportunity to learn from past experiences and leverage evidence-based decision-making. Aligning climate commitments with scientific evidence, using economic models for cost-effective solutions, and prioritizing adaptation planning are key priorities amidst the urgent need to accelerate climate action. Let's seize this chance to turn climate strategies into concrete projects and investments, building on lessons from previous cycles to drive meaningful progress in our global fight against climate change. #ClimateAction #ParisAgreement #NDCs #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/eHHmHWHq

Adapting to climate change is arguably the most significant issue facing our generation. Below is a link to the first in a series of articles by my partners Stephanie de Groot and Bianca Tree addressing where New Zealand is in our climate adaption journey, the evolving climate adaption policy settings, and the actions required at the local level to establish and implement adaption plans. How we adapt is a complex problem – with many stakeholders, trade-offs, costs, and alternative consequences to consider. And now of course is a question for large NZX listed entities and financial institutions to consider in their public mandatory climate-related disclosures, as to how they may be impacted.
