One of the crucial factors contributing to an employee's growth and career progression is the workplace environment. The workplace needs to foster conditions that promote practicality and self-confidence, thereby motivating employees to excel in their roles. Rao (2006) stated, “One face of loyalty relates to the positive disposition an employee holds towards the organization, the ‘feel-good’ element or how psychologically wedded the employee is to the organization. This is what we call Attitudinal or Emotional Loyalty. The second face relates to the stated future behaviour of the employee or behavioural loyalty” (p. 34).

Incivility in the workplace. Many organizations and workplaces do not have structures in place for dealing with incivility in their work environment, and this directly or indirectly affects workflow, value of communication, and interpersonal relationships between employees. Let's paint a picture. Regardless of how experienced you are in your role when you first arrive at a new workplace, there is a feeling of unease, as it is natural for your psychosocial instinct to scan, learn, monitor and understand new environments. Now imagin that your first impression of the people around such a workplace connotes toxicity, or the induction and introduction were not welcoming, or your employer wants you to work at full capacity comparatively to other employees on your first day. The most damaging of all is to have a workplace where there is no formal process of complaint and disciplinary procedures, or where employees do not adhere to it but rather choose to shout or replace anger on other employees rather than follow a more formal and laid down process. The constant complaining, intolerance and the inability to accommodate others create a toxic space, and an uneasy environment to do business, thus, the more reason why many prefer WFH (working from home). Needless to say; no one reserves the right to shout at another person, over flog issues out of proportion, hence, when organizations do not constantly remind their workers to always be civil and professional when speaking to others, sending emails, and communicating with stakeholders. When there is a serious sense of OCD in a workplace, toxicity kicks in, and it destroys the fabric of social relations in the workplace, making room for less dedication to work, and less value for the quality of output.
