🌟 Let's Talk About Elder Care 🌟 - As the world population continues to age, it’s crucial that we address the challenges and opportunities in elder care. - Providing support and care for our elderly loved ones isn’t just a responsibility, it’s an act of love and compassion that enriches both parties. - The discussions and decisions surrounding elder care can be complex and emotionally charged, but they are essential for ensuring the well-being and dignity of our seniors. - Let's shift our perspective from seeing elder care as a burden to recognizing it as a privilege to honor and care for those who have paved the way for us. - It’s time to have open conversations, explore innovative solutions, and advocate for policies that prioritize the needs and rights of our aging population. - Investing in quality elder care isn’t just a moral imperative, it’s an investment in building a more compassionate and inclusive society for all ages. - Let’s come together to create a future where every senior is valued, respected, and supported in living their best life. - Remember, one day, we too will be in the position of needing care and support, so let's build a society that we’ll be proud to age in. Join the conversation on Elder Care and share your thoughts, experiences, and ideas for creating a more age-friendly world. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our seniors and shape a future that embraces and celebrates the wisdom and contributions of our older generation. 🌿 #ElderCare #AgeingWithDignity

Becoming a grandparent is a joyous occasion, filled with anticipation and dreams of the future. When your grandchild has special needs, it can also bring a host of unexpected emotions and challenges. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, but remember, you’re not alone. Here are some tips to help you navigate this journey: -Have patience as you adjust to this latest information and give yourself space to process it. -Love your grandchild’s parents in practical and helpful ways. -Accept your grandchild’s disability so you can be genuinely supportive parents to your children when they need you. -Move past your fears for the sake of those you love. -Assure the grandchild that you love them just as much as those who preceded them or those who will follow. -As grandparents, take the time to get the basic facts about your grandchild’s disability and its accompanying struggles or challenges. Remember, every child is unique and brings their own special light into the world. Your love and support can make a world of difference. The great state of Ohio has recognized May as Older Americans Month! Older Americans (60+) comprise more than 2.8 million of our residents - almost 24%! Older adults are active members of our communities, working, volunteering, caring for families, and contributing to our society. If you are an older adult, what improvements should be made to ensure that you enjoy a high quality of life? If you're not an older adult yet, what changes can we make now to ensure that you'll have a healthy and happy aging experience in the future?

As an older adult, at what point do you ask for help or accept care? I have now started giving presentations on this topic to older adult audiences and have received strong interest. This is not surprising, for two reasons: 1) There is hardly any literature out there about reaching out for help from the perspective of the older adult, instead the vast majority is written for the adult child audience. 2) Many older adults grapple with how to ask for help / accept care. Ultimately, they still want to be in charge. (As do we all!) As eldercare consultants who are working with families, it is so important that we pay attention to the 'silent' voice of the older adult. In my presentations to older adult audiences, my goal is to help them become better advocates for themselves. Ultimately, this starts with becoming knowledgeable about the community resources and services available to older adults, so that if / when they reach out to ask for help, they have a sense of their options. In this scenario they can maintain greater control in the decision making of their own futures.

Happy International Day of Older Persons 2024! 🌍✨ Today, we celebrate the seniors who are the bedrock of our communities, passing on their invaluable wisdom to generations. As Tia Walker beautifully said, “To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors.”, let's get into action and actively work to create supportive environments. Embracing Ageing with Dignity This year’s theme, "Ageing With Dignity," highlights the critical need for robust support systems that empower older adults to live gracefully. Aging is a natural phenomenon, but how we navigate it—both individually and as a society—can make all the difference. Addressing Ageism Ageism remains a significant barrier, limiting opportunities for many older individuals. Today is not just about recognition; it’s a call to action. We must address the challenges faced by the ageing population and advocate for inclusive policies that promote their rights, ensure access to healthcare, and encourage their engagement in society. Our Commitment As we honor the wisdom and resilience of older persons, let’s commit to creating a world where aging is celebrated. Together, we can strengthen the support systems that enable graceful aging and enrich our communities. We Growing Young promise to stride towards creating heathier, stronger and fitter seniors. Let’s make dignity and respect for all ages a priority! #InternationalDayofOlderPersons #AgingWithDignity #Ageism #CommunitySupport #RespectForElders Growing Young #healthy #dignity #fitness #physiotherapists
Today marks the International Day of Older Persons—a day to honor the incredible contributions made by older adults to our families, communities, and workplaces. This year's theme, “Aging with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide,” serves as a powerful reminder of the growing proportion of the aging population. It emphasizes the urgent need to enhance care and support systems to enable graceful aging for all. Let’s take this opportunity to advocate for policies and initiatives that ensure older adults receive the dignity and respect they deserve. Happy International Day of Older Persons! 🌍 #internationaldayofolderpersons #dignity #purpose #celebrateelderly #respect #supportsystem

Continuing to share educational resources on Ageism, we have episode 2 of the Virginia Helping Elders Access Resources (HEAR) video series. This video addresses the strong link between ageism and elder abuse, aiming to change the views we have about growing old. It highlights the harms of the single story of aging and the importance of a more authentic life span perspective.
