Kicking off the first Economics and Public Policy seminar of Spring 2024: Nayoung Rim, Department of Economics, US Naval Academy “Officer Misconduct, Arrest Types, and Court Outcomes.” Abstract: This paper looks at whether officers with more misconduct make different types of arrests. To try to get a causal estimate, we compare officers who are as-good-as-randomly assigned to work the same shift in Chicago. We find that officers with higher misconduct make more arrests than officers with no misconduct, and more arrests for less serious (non-index) crimes. Further, arrests made by officers with more misconduct are less likely to result in charges, and, conditional on making it to court, are more likely to have a Not Guilty court outcome. That’s a leader.
General (Ret.) Mark A. Welsh III was named the 27th president of Texas A&M University earlier this month. President Welsh grew up in San Antonio, coming to Kyle Field on football Saturdays and learning Aggie traditions from his father, Mark A. Welsh Jr., Class ’46. His dad was the first of 15 Aggies in the Welsh family. Learn more about the new president, his family, and his love for Texas A&M by watching this excerpt from his 2022 speech at Campus Muster, delivered when Welsh was dean of Texas A&M University - The Bush School of Government and Public Service.

Some of you may know that George M. Smerk, Jr., distinguished professor of transportation at Indiana University, author, and public transportation expert, passed away last year. RT&S just recently learned about George's passing, and we published a brief feature and obituary on our website yesterday. I know that George had a lot of students who now work in the transit and transportation industry, so I'd like to get the word out as widely as possible. You can read the RT&S piece here: https://lnkd.in/dVyHkmhd

Good morning from sunny, bright, currently 6 degrees above the average daily high, Sauna Summer Bahrain. Today is Wednesday 14 August 2024. What better way to start the day than with Andrei. When you hear that the German government is going to start lauding fallen SS and Nazi Party leaders from WWII as the embodiment of military ideals for the current military to aspire to you understand why voicing peaceful disagreement especially founded on facts based reality to the government that falls within protected freedom of speech carries imprisonment. You understand why the UKG and USG, amongst others, also want to censor freedom of speech contrary to the government’s statements. Israel shows us where this leads today for those adverse to history, learning lessons from history or silo it away as irrelevant to today. Seriously, I am wondering where in the West can one get a good, classical/old world substantive, education? Our educational system may be excellent in neoliberal and neoconservative principles and discourse. But what if these principles are both wrong and incomplete substantively? Where does one go for a good education? https://lnkd.in/dhbk7T3F

Just watch this powerful video by Christopher Bailey! I would explain what it is about, but I don't have the time (pun intended).
Thanks to Community Jameel for editing this short piece of mine from the six hour live stream of the The White House consultation on culture and community hosted by the National Endowment for the Arts. I would describe what I say in it, and the wise words of the other speakers including the Surgeon General, the NEA Chair, and the 2nd Gentleman of the US, Renee Fleming, among others but I don’t have the time. https://lnkd.in/e5U3EX5a
