🚸 Back-to-School Crosswalk Safety Reminder! 🚸
As schools reopen, ensuring the safety of children walking to and from school is essential. Ruby Bridges, a civil rights icon renowned for her bravery and advocacy for educational equality, inspires us to prioritize safety in school zones. To support this mission, AAA Mountain West Group has partnered with the Ruby Bridges Foundation to host another year of Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day in November which underscores the importance of crosswalk safety.
Here are a few key back to school reminders to help keep our students safe:
🛑 Slow Down in School Zones: Speed limits are reduced for a reason. Stay alert and drive cautiously.
🚶♀️ Yield to Pedestrians: Always stop for children and crossing guards in crosswalks. They have the right of way.
👀 Stay Focused: Eliminate distractions like texting or eating while driving near schools or bus stops.
⏰ Plan Ahead: Give yourself extra time during school hours to account for slower speeds and increased pedestrian activity.
Stay tuned for more as we approach RBWTSD!

I’ve had this Four Corners episode on my watch list for a while. I’ve held off because I knew how personally upsetting I’d find it and because of how close it hits home as a parent.
As a teacher and school leader I remember clearly those children who struggled with coming and being in school - the layers of trauma from that daily struggle for the whole family unit are real for many. I also know I’ve not always had the understanding and deep empathy for those families as I do today.
I feel troubled by attendance as a competition in schools: morning tea with the principal for perfect attendees, weekly winners of the Come-along Cup trophy at assembly etc. I’ve seen the glaring, accusatory eyes towards those students who make it to school after days away because they’ve impacted the attendance data and chance of winning a prize. Can you imagine the shame, further trauma, greater likelihood of more absenteeism?
There are many ‘accidental’ homeschoolers out there where families don’t have any options other than to homeschool their child/ren because schools struggle to cater for them.
Things are changing/awareness is growing and there are some wonderful examples of success and many extraordinary teachers out there but much more is needed.
Simply making it to school and masking for the day is not the aim, it’s not the win. The win happens when students go to school in conditions where they can thrive and not be further negatively impacted from the experience.
