Talk about creative recruiting and retention. I'd love to hear other innovative recruiting strategies
A group of educators moved in to the Fairfield County Teacher Village this weekend. This village gives educators in the district an affordable housing option with a short commute to rural schools. Juan Alvarado is the inaugural Educator in Residence in the USC College of Education house in the village. He is beginning his first year in the classroom. “You do take a moment and think, ‘Is this too good to be true?’” Alvarado said, “I’m thankful for the position and (that) I took advantage of the opportunity.” See the full story on WIS-TV: bit.ly/46EFL1T

Part 3 Why? Schools with character education missions can increase job satisfaction, well-being, and teacher motivation. You may be interested to know there are currently 57,669 teaching positions in Arizona and over 142,000 fully certified teachers in the state. This seems to suggest many qualified teachers in AZ are choosing not to teach. Character education could potentially improve the work environment and retain qualified teachers in the classroom. https://ow.ly/TelO50QbAsk

Many, many years ago in my first year as an NYC middle school math teacher, my colleagues and I would trade stories about our experiences in teacher preparation programs - some were heavy on pedagogical theory and light on practical experience…others were “trial by fire” and “learn as you go” - all at the expense of the children in our classrooms. What if there was a program that provided the space for both pedagogy and practice, the opportunity to learn from and work side by side a master mentor teacher, and the time to hone your craft…while earning a living wage and getting your teaching credential? Y’all it’s here: Marshall. Teacher. Residency.

Excited to share the first statewide look at uncertified teachers in Texas and how they impact student achievement. Link to policy brief: https://shorturl.at/6T9q7 Some key highlights: 1. Nearly half of first-time new teacher hires are uncertified 2. Uncertified teachers made up over 80% of new hires in 55 counties 3. 72% of uncertified new teachers have no prior experience working in Texas public schools 4. Nearly 1 in 5 uncertified new teachers do not hold a bachelor’s degree 5. Students with new uncertified teachers perform significantly worse in reading and math, unless that teacher has previous experience working in a Texas public school

The theme of Jeff's message is removing ambiguity. He states that kids are perceptive and when they are safe they pick up on that overall feeling in their safe space, the classroom. TownSteel Inc. created the Aegis bored lock to help remove ambiguity. A simple action to lock the lock from the inside and a simple glance to verify the lock's status. Removing ambiguity and keeping people safe are some of the things our lock does! Check it out below! #schoolsafety #schoolsecurity #classroomsecurity #townsteel

#ICYMI: Annie Kessler, Executive Director of City Year New York, was featured on CBS News last month. She spoke about our work to recruit Student Success coaches to curb the teacher shortage in New York City. "A lot of mentors come in knowing they want to go into education, and we give them experience in the classroom and training to put them on that path. Then we have a lot of young people who come in and they really don't know what they want to do next, and then they decide over the course of the year that education is the career path for them."
