Saudi Arabia's ambitious vision for a new linear city, Neom, has undergone significant alterations. Originally envisaged as a 170km long, 500m tall, mirrored parallel skyscraper city, now the blueprint has been reduced to 2.4km in length. Delays in approving the 2024 Neom budget and shrinking resident expectations, from 1.5M to fewer than 300,000, have been cited as reasons for the adjustment. Neom is a major part of Saudi economic diversification efforts, and its cost is projected to be between $1T and $1.5T. Despite the curtailment, construction is underway and active, with a grand scale of activities, including the world's largest piling operation. In related developments, WeBuild has a $4.7bn contract to build an artificial lake as part of the mega-project. As of now, involved engineering companies and Neom has not commented on the revised plans.

In the vast expanse of NEOM, where Saudi Arabia’s future city is rising, there’s a new mirage: timely payments and top-notch health and safety. Thanks to Tom Pashby (New Civil Engineer) for highlighting these issues inc. the quiet disappearance of Arcadis from the scene. When billions are at stake, everyone wants their paycheck on time and of-course their limbs and more importantly ‘life’ intact. But is it just about payment terms, or are we also navigating cultural differences and business practices that challenge the very ESG values of 2020’s and beyond. In NEOM where tradition meets tomorrow, I hope the ‘sustainable’ certainty is more than just the sand. #PrestigeOnTheLine

As the Line gigaproject advances in Saudi Arabia's Neom initiative, new construction details reveal the monumental effort required to transform a vast desert into a futuristic megacity. The project reportedly consumes one-fifth of the world’s steel supply. The Line, a core part of Saudi Arabia’s strategy to shift from an oil-based to a tourism-focused economy, will eventually stretch 170 km (105 miles). The initial phase, set for completion by 2030, will span 2.4 km (1.5 miles), stand 500 m (1,640 ft) tall, and be 200 m (656 ft) wide. This mirrored structure will house 300,000 residents in an AI-driven, air-conditioned city with extensive surveillance systems. To support this, a SAR 700-million ($190-million) concrete multi-plant factory will produce 20,000 cubic meters of concrete daily. Over 100,000 workers are currently preparing the site, with nearly 1,000 of the 30,000 foundation piles already placed. Neom’s transparency efforts aim to reassure investors and secure further funding.
