Will you be at BuildingEnergy Boston? Join us tomorrow and Wednesday (March 19th-20th) at this Boston event for high-performance building & sustainable energy professionals & practitioners! New Ecology Senior Energy Engineer Neil Donnelly and Energy Engineer Charlie Simek will be speaking on Tuesday at 10:30 am on Equitable, Data Driven, Domestic Hot Water Decarbonization (link in bio). While electrification of domestic hot water is picking up steam, outdated sizing guidelines result in oversized, expensive, and inefficient systems, especially in affordable multifamily housing. New Ecology’s data, from over 20 affordable multifamilyhousing sites, reveals differences between the measured loads and traditional sizing guidelines, presenting opportunities for higher system efficiency, reduced operating costs, and lower first costs as these buildings move to electrify their domestic hot water. See you there! #BEBOS24

As the World Green Building Council’s 16th annual World Green Building Week #WGBW24 draws to a close, Calum Thompson, P.E., our Energy Planning Lead in the US shares insights on how he helped National Western Center in #Denver take advantage of a wastewater connection in their district energy system to provide more than 90 percent of the heating and cooling needed for the campus and avoid 2,600 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. “Our energy master planning process built confidence that this novel system could feasibly meet the goals of the campus and while forming the basis of design. Now the largest system of its kind in the US, it serves as a demonstration of cold-climate heating decarbonization that’s being replicated across North America.” Learn more about Calum’s expertise and how he’s supporting our clients to deliver on their decarbonization goals: https://lnkd.in/gAQppbYf #BuildingTheTransition

We are excited to attend the Urban Land Institute Fall Meeting and discuss the evolving relationship between the #Utilities and #RealEstate sectors in the panel, Utilities and Real Estate: Forging a True Partnership for the Energy Transition. Utilities are emerging as crucial partners in helping the built environment achieve its #decarbonization goals. And in turn, the grid can benefit from the flexibility commercial real estate offers. Join senior executives for a real-world conversation, moderated by EIP's SVP, Jake Elder, on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the #EnergyTransition. Closer collaboration could be the key to accelerating progress in both industries. #ULIFallMeeting #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #Decarbonization #CommercialRealEstate #Utilities https://lnkd.in/ervB_Z7t

Exciting news! Ecotope, @AESC, and @ASK Energy are launching a @CalNEXT research project to develop a groundbreaking fully packaged plug-and-play commercial CO2 heat pump. We're teaming up with @Flow Environmental to bring their ANSWR product to market, addressing a critical gap in technology needed to decarbonize the building sector. The ANSWR product is designed for retrofitting buildings currently using gas boiler systems, delivering medium temperature water (140-180°F). It replaces the existing boiler, chiller, and domestic water heating equipment with a single integrated unit. We are now seeking potential demonstration sites in California. The CalNEXT grant will support early site design studies, developing conceptual designs to verify feasibility and estimate costs and savings for full decarbonization. These case studies will offer recommendations for future actions and guide future grant proposals for installations. Ideal sites should have: • Existing gas-fired hydronic heating and cooling systems nearing end-of-life • Small-medium commercial or multifamily buildings (~20-50,000 SF) • Commitment to serving disadvantaged communities • Simple, typical buildings suitable for replication • Owners dedicated to decarbonization • Significant domestic hot water load • Location in the Southern California Edison service territory Join us in this pioneering effort to drive sustainable innovation and decarbonize our building sector! #Sustainability #Innovation #Decarbonization #HeatPumps #BuildingSector #CleanEnergy

Check out this decarbonization retrofit opportunity for plug-and-play CO2 heat pump demonstration projects! Especially those who work in the Southern California Edison service territory on affordable, campus, and multifamily housing, please take a look at this chance to participate in the CalNEXT grant “which will support early site design studies, developing conceptual designs to verify feasibility and estimate costs and savings for full decarbonization.” Added bonus… working with the Ecotope, Inc. team. Hospitality and multifamily housing historically lagged in adoption of high performance (e.g. LEED and LBC certification rates). Let’s not repeat that trend as we decarbonize. Now is the chance for our essential housing stock to take the lead! #Decarbonization #AffordableHousing #ClimateAction

Day 2 at Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's BuildingEnergy Boston was packed with new learnings and new connections. Three highlights of the full event for me: 1) New appreciation for (and occasional panic about) the impact of flooding on our homes, businesses, and communities. Two excellent keynote events laid it all out there - and shone light on the architects, engineers, and contractors who know how to build in flood resilience and amelioration, not just for a single building but to benefit the whole community: Elaine Hoffman, Jennifer Johnson, Patrick Murphy, Katie Wholey 2) NESEA Diversity Caucus! So grateful to find this community within a community at NESEA. Thanks so much to the leadership of the Diversity Caucus for creating the space, connection, and a masterful trivia game on diversity in the construction industry that was both heartbreaking and hilarious. 3) An excellent talk on “Scaling Residential Decarbonization” describing the first cohort of Massachusetts Clean Energy Center’s Decarbonization Pathways Pilot conducted with Abode Energy Management. The initial lessons highlighted the added education, decision support, and time that residents are likely to need - in addition to financial support - to make the interconnected set of upgrades to their electrical, heating, hot water, and automobiles. This will be a major mind shift for most homeowners. MA can’t meet its 2050 Net Zero goals without decarbonizing our existing 1M+ homes, and it is not as simple as swapping in a new model of hot water heater. Meg Howard, Tamir Nir, Mike Ostiguy Wishing I had a time machine to be able to go back and attend even more of the sessions (though my brain may have reached max capacity). #BE24 #BuilidngEnergyBoston #NESEA
