The effects of climate change are always top of mind at the Aquarium. The city's Green Ribbon Commission has been working with the Aquarium and other cultural institutions to design phased climate action plans that will reduce emissions in five-year increments. The goal: to get to net zero by 2050. The Aquarium's Chief of Conservation and Stewardship Letise LaFeir talks about the Aquarium's resilience perspective and the importance of "early wins" in reducing our footprint, including eliminating single-use plastics in our gift shop. Today is #EarthDay2024 an annual event on 22nd April to demonstrate support for environmental conservation and sustainability and encouraging us all to unite in our actions for a healthier planet 🌍 and brighter future. As Landscape Architects we have a deep connection with nature 🌿 and as a business and on each of the project we are engaged on we aspire to tread lightly, whilst bettering places for their users. Whether this be through carbon reduction, increasing tree canopy cover, integrating SuDS solutions, or waste reduction, each step helps towards action against climate change. How can we reconnect our buildings with nature to support biodiversity? The US Green Building Council shows how adding nature to our building designs can help both people and wildlife. By using green roofs, native plants, and creating natural spaces in cities, we can support local plants and animals, clean the air, cool down urban areas, and provide relaxing green spaces for everyone to enjoy. This approach not only helps the environment but also makes our buildings more sustainable and better connected to nature. How can promoting biodiversity in building design lead to a greener, healthier future? Today, in celebration of World Nature Conservation Day, we reinforce the crucial role that cork oak forests play in sustainability. The Rio Frio Estate is an example of the profound connection between cork oak forests and sustainability. It showcases the innovation and deep respect we have for these ecosystems, embodying the true spirit of this day. And that's why we created the Forest Intervention Project - a program designed with the purpose of enhancing our forests and our raw material – cork -, dedicated on deepening the knowledge about the resistance of cork oaks, promoting the sharing of technical knowledge about the activity and enabling the planting of more than one million trees on our properties. Through these initiatives, we increase carbon capture and boost the sustainability of the cork oak forest and its ecosystems. These forests not only provide the raw material for our products but also support biodiversity, combat climate change, and sustain local communities. It is fascinating to observe yet another pertinente shift in mindset demonstrated through engaging nature conservation endeavours; a defunct golf course is set to be repurposed into a tree sanctuary. This transformation is a pronounced reminder of the importance we now place on green recovery and the resurgence of public botanical spaces. • The concept presents intriguing grounds for speculation and looking forward, innovative projects of this nature could become a prime focus for urban development strategies, converging ecological imperative with cultural value creation. • Such instances extend to illustrate that when the environment has reached its resilience due to previous misuse, the importance of acknowledging these shifts and allowing unparalleled rectification is paramount for the regeneration of natural habitats. With more emphasis than ever on sustainability and promoting biodiversity, thoughtful projects such as these appear as symbols of our conscious push towards ecological correction and balance. Let's ponder: 1. The multitude of potential benefits, from climate regulation and pollution absorption to providing valuable habitats for plant and animal species. 2. The importance of integrating nature in urban spaces which also nurtures public health and uplifts community spirit. Hidden behind such perceived simplicity of an endeavour lies an intricate web of possibilities that if put into practice conscientiously, can prove as catalyst for creating liveable, sustainable cities. In essence, this transformative endeavour stands as testament not only of man-made interventions' potential reversal but also as a figurative proof of our general acknowledgment of the mistakes we have made against our environment. The thoughtfulness of this venture shines a beacon of hope and reinforces the belief in our human capacity to repair, restore and revitalize. Would it be too far fetched to anticipate an era brimming with an array of green sanctuaries, formerly defunct urban spaces reborn in a new sustainable form? Parece to suggest not! #Sustainability #UrbanRenewal #GreenSpaces.
