I’ve had such an incredible crash course in the power, possibility and urgency of inclusive R and D for education. One of the most striking things I’ve learned since I joined Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF) is that educators often find ourselves stuck between competing incentive structures. On one hand there is an incredible academic network whose ideas, research and knowledge is essential but whose incentives are often geared towards publication and knowledge generation. And on the other pole is tech enabled tools and companies - which often provide essential services but whose incentives are tied to scale and engagement. While these two are essential to the future of education they are also insufficient. The Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF) is building a new incentive architecture in which incredible partners like Andres Bustamante, Kreshnik Begolli and their incredible team can find the time, space and support to ask different questions and find new ways to the answers. This is essential to the future of education and they are a headlight in the work of what doing things differently might look like.

If you're someone who is talking about, planning for, trying to provide, or demanding "quality early care and education," I urge you to spend some time with Defending the Early Years' free, virtual summer institute "Advancing Quality in Defense of Early Childhood Education and Care" from June 24-26. "Quality has always been an important component in ensuring that all young children have access to early care and education. Nonetheless, defining, measuring, and guaranteeing high quality demonstrates the complexities and difficulty in making high quality for all a reality. What does quality mean to you? How do you demonstrate quality in your program or classroom? How can the systems used to measure quality be improved? What does high quality mean in relation to justice and equity for disadvantaged and marginalized children? The 2024 Sixth Annual DEY Summer Institute will address these questions and many more." Click the for more information or to register!

What is National School Choice Week? 🧐 Picture this, your child finds a learning environment where they are happy and thriving. But it doesn’t quite look like the traditional school setting. National School Choice Awareness Foundation conducted a survey asking parents about their kids’ educational needs. The survey showed that only 29% say that the same school type works well for all of the children in their home. Education choice brings together different school types: 🎒 Private schools 🏠 Homeschooling 🏘️ Microschools 🏫 Public schools 🍎 Charter Schools One child might benefit from the structure of private or public school. Another might benefit from the flexibility of either homeschooling or a microschool. National School Choice Week is a national movement that partners with organizations like Cardinal to put on events celebrating education choice. We want to connect you with schools like those mentioned above. Plus we’ve included other learning experiences like martial arts, speech therapy, tutoring, and more! Please join us on January 27th, 10 am - 1 pm at the Morgantown School Fair. Register today! https://lnkd.in/dTSWAVVQ Also, check out the NSCW survey here: https://lnkd.in/gxxKdseX

Here are some tips to keep attendance on track: 🎯 Schools: Foster a welcoming and safe environment to help students feel excited about learning. 👪 Parents/Carers: Establish consistent routines and open lines of communication with teachers. We’re excited to see how the schools and students we support progress next half term. What has been your school’s biggest attendance win so far?

I am so pleased to be presenting again with my wonderful death education colleagues: Illene Cupit, Carla Sofka, and Rebecca Morse! We are presenting on teaching death education online in a post-pandemic world. Here is the description in the conference schedule: "Online education, and death education in particular, expanded significantly during the pandemic. One of the major lessons learned was that online teaching does not involve just mapping what is done in the classroom to an online environment; rather it involves creating course content, student interactions and actions in a unique environment with different rules regarding space, time, and how learning takes place. This symposium will re-examine the lessons we have learned from our experiences as online death educators, with an eye towards providing best teaching practices that are tailored to an online context of teaching dying, death, and loss."
