🆕Case Study - IBioIC Feasibility fund project with CuanTec and Abertay University Packaging and cosmetics often use non-environmentally friendly petrochemicals or synthetic ingredients in their production. Whereas CuanTec have developed proprietary technologies to up-cycle the #waste stream from seafood processing companies into #biodegradable, ocean-friendly, #compostable #bioplastics which have natural #antimicrobial properties. IBioIC provided them with almost £30k #funding from our Feasibility fund to assess the antimicrobial effectiveness of CuanTec’s technology. As a result, this project has enabled CuanTec to externally validate the #antimicrobial effectiveness of two product lines, which will inform product patents and serve as a means to showcase the advantages of CuanTec's offerings to potential customers. As a result of this project, CuanTec have moved closer to commercialisation sooner than could have been achieved without support. 💡 Hi2BIO: From the Fruit Industry to the Dairy Industry 🥛 Great news! Following the success in the fruit industry 🍊, Hi2BIO has initiated the second phase of testing in the dairy industry 🐄. 🌱What is Hi2BIO? #Hi2BIO is a pioneering project that converts industrial #wastewater into green hydrogen through advanced #biological processes. We combine dark fermentation and photofermentation to maximize biological #hydrogen production. 🤝 This project, active between July 2023 and July 2026, is in collaboration with the Universidad de Zaragoza is an example of the strength of public-private collaboration. Hi2BIO has been recognized as a Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) and is funded by the NextGenerationEU funds. With this new approach in the dairy industry, we continue to reaffirm our commitment to innovation and sustainability. 🔎 More info about the project: https://lnkd.in/e_GSewv5

Synonym : Very interesting publication for a very relevant issue. But if I am not wrong it seems that the meaning of #Biofoundry adopted in this report is a little bit confusing. Instead using #Biomanufacturing facility would be more appropriate. Actually biofoundry stands for a dedicated unit for designing strains 🆚 biomanufacturing plant which is a facility for implementing these engineered strains at industrial scale for producing a broad range of bioproducts
After months in the works, today our team is excited to announce our new report in collaboration with The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) that sheds light on the path for #biomanufacturing to reach $200 billion in speciality markets over next decade. The report offers detailed insights for transitioning the global economy to more sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective methods of production and points to next-generation biofoundries as key catalysts for the coming wave of superior products. Demand is solidifying for bioproducts, which leverage the power of engineered microorganisms and biological processes in place of traditional production methods. But for change to happen, costs must come down. Key insights from the report include: 🔎Optimized large-scale facilities can lower production costs by as much as 50% on existing strains. 🔎More and larger facilities and improved strains could reduce production costs by up to 90%, achieving or surpassing price parity with incumbent methods for most products. 🔎 The market for biomanufactured ingredients in three industries alone—specialty chemicals, food, and chemical precursors could reach $200 billion by 2040. Compelling report from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Synonym contributors, including Jean-Francois Bobier, Tristan Cerisy, PhD, Anne-Douce Coulin Kuhlmey, Crystal Bleecher, PE, Victoria Sassoon and Brentan Alexander, on bringing costs down in biomanufacturing. A worthy goal considering the estimate that “scaling up industrial precision fermentation can create a $200 billion market by 2040, seven times the current size, if companies build enough production capacity to lower costs.” As demand for products that use bioalternatives grows, driven by the desire to build sustainable manufacturing processes while reducing carbon emissions, the need for large-scale, biomanufacturing facilities that can meet industrial-level demand and cost-targets grows. Creating this capacity is why Manus built one of the largest piloting and large-scale manufacturing BioFacilities in the Americas. Providing the opportunity for large-scale manufacturing and optimizing strains with large-scale manufacturing in mind are both integral for efficient scaling and cost-effective biomanufacturing. Here we go - some thoughts around #biomanufacturing from Synonym and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the cost barriers. A few good ideas included, and a good write-up also for financial or economic driven colleagues, not only us geek #engineers. I am happy to share in my network. download for free and share your thoughts. A bit confusing to me is the use of the term "biofoundries" in the report, where they call it: (quote) "These in turn require construction and optimization of biofoundries—large-scale, standardized biomanufacturing facilities that can meet industrial-level demand— and continued improvements in strain engineering."(end quote) While I can agree to a good extent to the need of such hubs / sites, the term "biofoundry" has been coined and is recognized by most people to be a highly automated and computer aided DBTL infrastructure, capable of escalating (not always accelerating) the synthetic biology workflow towards improved strain geno- and phenotypes. Also "precision fermentation" is a term used to allow the food industry (in the advent of alternative proteins showing up again and saw traction) to differentiate from their fermentation (like prebiotics or beer) with the way the rest of the world ferments (pharma, chemistry, etc). Its a bit misleading in my opinion, and leaned towards the food sector primarily. #biotechnology #scaleup

Are bioproducts made from precision fermentation processes—long predicted to disrupt industries from pharmaceuticals to food to chemicals—finally on the verge of achieving their potential? Thanks to our research with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), we're optimistic that it's possible to solve this multi-decade conundrum! Demand is solidifying for products that use biological processes and genetically modified microorganisms in place of traditional production methods. But for change to happen, costs must come down. Biomanufacturing is paving the way to a sustainable future, with potential to cut production costs by 50-90%. In our recent report with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), our findings highlight a booming $200B opportunity across specialty chemicals, food, and chemical precursors by 2040. #Plastic is a popular choice for #packaging due to its #portable, #durable, #lightweight traits. However, it remains #dormant for several centuries to #degrade coupled with our inability to destroy its structure and results in the piling of perilous #plasticdebris. Furthermore, exposure of plastic to light, #heat, #UVirradiation, and #water produces #microplastics and #nanoplastics. These widespread tiny #particles pollute the #environment, harm #wildlife, and contaminate #food, #water, and #air, and pose significant #healthrisks to #marinespecies, #plants, #animals, and #humans. My group at SDSU is using #cellulosic residue and #lignocellulosic residue from #agricultural #biomass and agricultural #processing #byproducts to develop #environmentally #sustainable and #plasticreplacingpackagingfilms that are #biodegradable, #strong and #transparent. We are using a variety of biomasses such as #corn, #wheat, #oat,#alfalfa,#corncob, #soyhulls, #switchgrass, #prairiecordgrass, #banana peel, #avocado peel, spent #coffeegrounds and #lawngrass, to name a few. The #films developed by us #biodegrade within 30 to 60 days at 20-24% #soilmoisture content. Our research involving #green and #recyclable chemicals is a promising, #economic, and #sustainable route to produce #biodegradable films to replace #petrochemical plastics and, thus, is an attractive contribution to the #circular #bioeconomy. Today #SDSU released a video news story: https://lnkd.in/e7ibGwXx about our research. Thanks to Addison DeHaven, Research Communications Coordinator at SDSU and my graduate students Sumi Regmi and Sandeep Paudel for help in making this video. #USDA #MSGA #MinnesotaSoybeanResearchPromotionCouncil, #MinnesotaWheatResearchPromotionCouncil, #NationalAlfalfaForageAlliance
