Sjajna konferencija. ✨ The Sustainable City Festival 2024, on October 24 at the Science and Technology Park in Niš, provided a visible platform for activists, experts and entrepreneurs to explore how sustainable development can drive Serbia’s progress. Organized by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and many local partner organizations, the event challenged common myths about sustainability, viewing it not as an optional goal but as essential for long-term progress. Panel discussions highlighted the role of innovation — both technological and cultural — in promoting sustainable business models, while discussions on citizen engagement emphasized the influence of civic initiatives in promoting public awareness. The event attracted a lot of media interest, which underlines the growing importance of these topics in the public discourse in Serbia. Given the challenges ahead, the festival gave participants a renewed sense of dynamism and cooperation. European cities are urging the European Parliament to accelerate the transition to a ♻️ #circulareconomy! In an 📃 open letter to newly elected members of the European Parliament, the #CircularCities Frontrunner Group – led by the Gemeente Amsterdam with support from ICLEI Europe and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation – calls for stronger policies that empower cities to lead the way. From enhancing strategic autonomy and competitiveness to scaling up sustainable urban practices, this coalition is pushing for transformative change. The letter is signed by Gemeente Amsterdam, Innovatie, Ayuntamiento de Vitoria-Gasteiz, Comune di Milano, Turun kaupunki - Åbo stad - City of Turku, Københavns Kommune, Malmö stad, stad Leuven and Câmara Municipal do Porto. LIVERPOOL TO HOST GLOBAL GOALS WEEK FOR 5TH YEAR RUNNING NEXT MONTH... Good to sit down this week with David Connor from 2030 Hub and talk all things sustainability alongside my colleague Clare Ellis Global Goals Week Liverpool may have previously passed you by. If it did, well 2023 was spectacular. Lord McConnell opened proceedings. Cllr Liam Robertson confirmed the city's climate commitments. 18 events took place across the Liverpool City Region. And, Al Pacino no less, gave a ‘half-time pep talk’ with a global audience reach to be envied. This year's plans will bring together leaders, policymakers, business leaders, community organisations, students and youth groups from around the region and the world, to share best practices, showcase innovative solutions, demand bolder leadership and develop new partnerships.   From September 22nd to 27th, 2030hub will host and support a wide variety of launches, interactive events, workshops, networking opportunities, and online content all designed to inspire and empower participants to take action to leave nobody behind and tackle climate change. Liverpool is already ‘Most Improved Sustainable Destination’ awarded by the Global Destination Sustainability Index. David’s call to action to all Liverpool City Region stakeholders includes: Take Action - Host your own sustainability / networking / educational event. Launch something new. Commit to be bolder! Advocate - Use this week to campaign for the change you want to see! Who can you influence or support? Share your successes! Collaborate - Actively support all local Global Goals activities. This year, 2030hub will be connecting Liverpool to the world through a locally relevant programme based on five key themes being announced at the UN General Assembly at UN HQ in New York at the same time. The announcement of this ‘Pact of the Future’ at this year's upcoming Summit of the Future aims to enhance cooperation on global challenges by focusing on: 1.    Sustainable development and financing for development 2.    International Peace and Security  3.    Science, technology and innovation and digital cooperation  4.    Youth and Future Generations  5.    Transforming global governance    This year could be interesting too as GGWL2024 will be overlapping the Labour Party Conference also being hosted in Liverpool. Belgium 2030, Here are the six candidate cities A few days ago, on 2 September to be exact, the deadline for submitting the candidature for European Capital of Culture in 2030 for Belgium expired. As Ecocnews already anticipated several months ago (here), six cities have agreed to be part of the competition. They are Namur, Molenbeek, Ghent, Louvain, Courtraie and, once again, Bruges. Ecocnews had also identified a seventh, Liège, but evidently changed its mind in the end. This is Belgium's fifth European Capital of Culture, coming after Anvers (1993), Brussels (2000), Bruges (2002) et Mons (2015). A special competition, this one from Belgium, because - a rare thing - it sees in the race a city, Bruges, which has already been European Capital of Culture. This is a possibility allowed by the latest regulations. On 21, 22 and 23 October, the candidates will present their bids to international experts at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) in Brussels. Her energy, insight, and ability to connect with both speakers and audience members truly made the event unforgettable. 💡Kjeld Stærk, Chairman of the Committee for Business and Green Growth, Sønderborg Municipality (Sønderborg Kommune); former Senior Vice President, Chairman, Danfoss set the stage with an inspiring opening speech, highlighting the importance of collaboration, innovation, and leadership in driving sustainable urban transformation. 💡Prof. Dr. Gesa Ziemer, Academic Lead UNITAC Hamburg (with UN Habitat, OICT);
Director City Science Lab (with MIT Media Lab) posed a critical question: “How can we implement urban technologies in cities and scale them up?” offering a forward-thinking roadmap for integrating technology into urban landscapes. 💡Navid Samandari, Head of Ventures at The Footprint Firm, asked us to consider: “Do we need more innovation to feed our net-zero ambitions?” pushing us to reimagine the role of innovation in achieving a sustainable future. 💡Daria (Dasha) Krivonos, CEO of the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies reframed uncertainty as a tool, not an obstacle, with her keynote: “Uncertainty as a feature, not a bug.” Her words encouraged us to embrace unpredictability as a catalyst for creativity and resilience. Closing the Loop in Eindhoven – what’s next? 🌟   We've just completed the second exciting stop on our neext European Talk roadmap, and what a highlight it was! Hosted by the visionary @Ahrend and @Signify teams in vibrant Eindhoven on the 3rd and 4th of June, our event was a true sign of innovation and collaboration. With the theme "Innovative Loops - Sustainable Foundations for Resilient Cities," our discussions ignited fresh ideas and passions as we explored how European cities are pioneering sustainability and resilience efforts. The diverse voices and expertise of our participants from different industries provided a fascinating range of insights, from groundbreaking technologies to visionary strategies, ensuring our collective journey towards a brighter and more sustainable future. Some takeaways: 🔑 Second-live objects are „as good as new“ 🔑 We are all part of the problem, but it is on us to become part of the solution 🔑 We need to build a common language across sectors As we look ahead to our next destination in Antwerp on the 24th and 25th of July 2024, we carry with us the momentum and motivation sparked by our time in Eindhoven. 🌍 Diversity, Collaboration & Sustainability: A Call to Action 🌍 At the recent Cultural Diversity Network Event hosted by Hello Zuidas, I was deeply inspired by the incredible energy and insights shared by: ✨ Neha Lagoo Ratnakar, CPTD®, inspiring author & keynote speaker ✨ Necla Kaplan, founder of First Gen ✨ Michael Glennon, teacher at Taalcentrum-VU ✨ Allan K. & Alicia Utami, representing the Diversity Network at ABN AMRO Bank N.V. This event showcased how Amsterdam thrives on its 180+ nationalities, particularly in Zuidas—a hub of global innovation. It was a powerful reminder that diverse perspectives drive the creativity and collaboration needed to solve sustainability challenges. In this spirit I also wanted to share that I’m honored to be part of two groundbreaking projects that embody this ethos of diversity, collaboration, and sustainability that are both launching in January: 🌊 Oceanographies by Nuria Bofarull—this initiative merges science, art, and community to explore ocean health, climate change, and cultural heritage. Through a journey from Venice to Rotterdam, it creates immersive installations and soundscapes, telling the powerful stories of European waters. ☕ Cafca Foundation by Dirck de Jong & Florian J. F. N. —A unique cultural hub in Utrecht that fosters connection, sociocultural sustainability, creativity, and inclusivity. Cafca is a safe haven where people come to share ideas, engage deeply, bridge sociocultural difference and find community in a world often dominated by isolation. 🚀 Both projects need support—whether it’s through collaboration, partnerships, or donations. We’re actively seeking funding to bring these visions to life and amplify their impact. Every contribution helps drive innovation and inclusivity in sustainability and culture. 💬 Let’s work together!
