Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O’Donovan, announced yesterday, a €2.3 million funding allocation to bolster the participation of six Irish universities in their involvement in European Universities Alliances (EUA). The funding, which will support SETU’s participation as an Alliance partner of EU-CONEXUS European University for Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability, marks the second round of support provided by the Department to the Alliances active in Ireland. The funding of EU-CONEXUS has been instrumental in opening up new opportunities for staff and students to share learnings, collaborate, and innovate with our European counterparts while addressing societal challenges. Reflecting on the AESOP - Association of European Schools of Planning— Annual Conference, which took place from 8 to 12 July, I am thrilled to share a moment from my keynote presentation on the "Chaotic Blueprint: Fragmented Governance Landscape of the European City." It was an honor to delve into the complexities of urban governance and the fragmented landscape of European cities alongside the esteemed Professor patrick Le Galès of SciencesPO. Our session explored the dynamic and often tumultuous nature of urban planning in Europe and the approach to defining the European city. We discussed how cities navigate the intricate web of governance structures, balancing the demands of sustainability, growth, and inclusivity, and how the disciplines of urban studies, planning, and geography approach these challenges. My message emphasized the need for comprehensive spatial governance approaches that allow for a holistic overview of problems within a relational regional landscape. In a market-dependent world, small-scale and fragmented interventions are insufficient to address the challenges of increasing inequalities, decreasing accessibility and affordability of urban space, and increasing environmental challenges effectively. A heartfelt thank you to AESOP - Association of European Schools of Planning, my colleagues at @SciencesPO, the Local Organization Committee (with special thanks to Marco Cremaschi), and all the brilliant minds who contributed to the vibrant discussions. This conference was a testament to the power of collaboration and knowledge-sharing in shaping the future of urban planning. The analysis of experiences of adapting #infrastructures in other European countries is used to develop innovative approaches in Germany and can offer new solutions. ✨ Exciting News from Paris! ✨ I attended the AESOP Annual Conference in Paris from July 8th to 12th. This year, I presented my paper, "On the Trail of a Policy: Rendering Business Improvement Districts Mobile and Experimented in Southern European Cities," which is currently under publication in Urban Geography. Through a comparative dialogue between Spanish and Portuguese cities, I argued for some caution against equating the presence and future circulation of urban policies exclusively out of more neo-liberal policy contexts, planning cultures, and political-institutional infrastructures. I demonstrated that theorizing policy mobilities from Southern Europe can be a fruitful approach to exploring how the genetic interconnectedness of urban processes can be mobilized to critique and perhaps extend concepts in urban theory through comparison. In my presentation, I made five key points: 💡 Policies do not always have a single point of origin: The movement of policies is rhizomatic in its characteristics. 💡 Rethinking scalar assumptions: Theorizing from a Southern-Mediterranean context allows us to reconsider some scalar assumptions in urban policy mobilities studies, emphasizing the centrality of scalar intertwining. 💡 Neglected socio-legal dimensions: Urban policy mobilities have overlooked socio-legal dimensions in different planning cultures, which are crucial for fully understanding policy circulation. 💡 Pilot programs as instances of policy learning/adaptation: Pilot programs are integral to policymaking processes and practices (another paper is currently under review in which we explore this particular aspect). 💡 The social labor of academics as policy mobilizers: Highlighting the role of academics in mobilizing and shaping policies. Returning from the AESOP - Association of European Schools of Planning annual congress, held this year at the historic campus of Sciences Po University in #Paris. The slogan for this year's event was "Game Changer? Planning for Just and Sustainable Urban Regions." Paris never lacks inspiration for urbanists, and this time it was especially insightful to see how the city is changing in front of the upcoming Olympic Games.   Among the huge variety of topics, I followed the Mobility track and focused on sessions about the #15MinuteCity concept. It was interesting to see how the discussion and research have evolved a few years after this concept gained high popularity. A promising urban idea with a lot of problems when it comes to practice.   I presented my previous quantitative work on #accessibility in Amsterdam, with focus on #transportjustice and #equity among different social groups. I am polishing this with my colleague Thomas Verbeek and I'm looking forward to turning it into a scientific article. I'm questioning the real-life impact of our work as researchers. How much do we really contribute? How close are we to the actual people and their realities? 20 Years of Grantmaking🔸🔹Flashback to 2014 when nearly $700,000 was granted to twenty-two projects and programs. I am very excited to share the information that Dr. Moritz Maikämper and I will co-chair a Roundtable session at the 36th AESOP - Association of European Schools of Planning Annual Congress, in Paris, France, 8-12 July 2024. The Roundtable is about participatory processes and their impact analysis in the context of urban (re)development. In this session, we intend to include scholars who might have been involved in diverse participatory processes (research or practices) such as governance, urban renewal or regeneration, design, political/social intervention, etc. to share their insights into the available or potential perspectives as well as the obstacles to understanding the interrelationship between participation processes and their related impacts. You can find more information about the roundtable session here:  https://lnkd.in/eT7UeSzk.   (agenda for the roundtable)  It’s a 90-minute open forum, and we plan to invite 4-5 speakers to present their ideas for 40 minutes and another 50 minutes will be for comments and more rounds of discussions between 10-12 discussants. If any of you are interested in the following question and playing a role (speaker, moderator, or discussant), please feel free to contact us:   1. What obstacles exist to hinder a comprehensive understanding of the interrelationship between participatory processes and their impacts? 2.
