Attendees will gain valuable perspectives on the unique challenges and strategies involved in governing diverse urban spaces in #LatinAmerica, from smaller municipalities to vast metropolitan regions. This conference offers a deep dive into urban and environmental governance, shedding light on the complexities of leadership in a metropolis of over 10 million inhabitants. A major focus will be on the ambitious efforts to revitalize Lima’s historic center and the surrounding areas, including the restoration of the Rimac River. December 18, three years after Richard’s passing, we honour his legacy by revisiting the groundbreaking ideas from his BBC Reith Lectures - Sustainable City, where he outlined the social and environmental responsibilities of architecture and urban planning. Remembering the impact of Richard’s Reith Lectures, Ivan Harbour, Senior Director, RSHP: “Richard taught me that architecture is much more than the design of buildings; its social and political impacts are equally important. It seemed natural, then, that he would be the first architect to deliver the Reith Lectures, 30 years ago. Leading up to that moment, the creative environment Richard oversaw, where the nascent ideas germinated, was more than a decade in the making. This is perhaps best demonstrated in the Royal Academy of Arts exhibition, ‘London as it Could be’ in 1986. I will always feel privileged to have been a small part of that conversation. The impact of his lectures was to have a profound influence on urbanism in the 21st century. They led indirectly to Richard’s chairing of the Urban Task Force, implemented by the then newly installed Blair Government. Many of the Task Force’s recommendations have been adopted globally over the last 25 years as cities have sought to accommodate continued, rapid urbanisation in the most sustainable way possible. On Wednesday, May 8th, sustainability change makers came together through Detroitisit on Zoom to discuss open dialogues about Detroit, the U.S., and international cities working towards, and on, Sustainable Urban Design solutions and its challenges. This was an outlet open to facilitating opinion, dialogue, information sharing, and cross-pollination of ideas between industry leads, developers, experts in sustainability, urban planning, and city building as a whole.
