✨ Sparking heritage-led regeneration in Ireland Last month, we visited Limerick in Ireland 🇮🇪 to team up with the European Urban Initiative and local authorities from across the country, and discuss how THRIVE and the 🌱 New European Bauhaus values have inspired a series of projects to salvage derelict or vacant heritage buildings for future generations! Did you know that the wellbeing created by day-to-day encounters with local heritage is worth £29 billion annually across the UK? According to a new Historic England report, simply living near heritage sites can improve life satisfaction by an average of £515 per person each year! The ‘Heritage Capital and Wellbeing’ report reveals that the presence of nearby historic places benefits residents’ quality of life, even if they don’t actively participate in heritage activities. This groundbreaking research highlights the immense value of heritage to our everyday lives, on par with the benefits of urban green spaces. Everyday, locally or regionally important buildings are key drivers of this increased life satisfaction. Being close to numerous local heritage sites contributes more to wellbeing than rare, exceptional historic places. This research, funded by the Culture Heritage Capital programme and supported by DCMS and HM Treasury, is the first to quantify the wellbeing value of heritage. It provides compelling economic evidence that underscores the importance of protecting our historic environment. This is why we work tirelessly on a volunteer basis to protect Scotland's historic buildings and places for the benefit of all. Regional networks and local character: CNU33 explores Providence: The 33rd annual Congress for the New Urbanism will explore national and international planning issues like housing and climate change through the lens of New England’s cities and towns.

We were honored to collaborate with the World Urban Campaign by UN-Habitat and Birmingham City University for the UN-Habitat Urban Thinkers Campus 2024 event, Towards an International Landscape Convention (ILC). This event is a key part of a global initiative to create an ILC, inspired by the success of the European Landscape Convention (ELC). Led by Kathryn Moore, IFLA past president, this movement has gained momentum over the past decade, bringing together academics, institutions, and individuals to expand the ELC’s vision on a global scale. The discussions followed a two-fold approach: 1. Engaging global organizations, academics, and professionals in conceptualizing the ILC. While it will take many more events to draft this convention, the momentum is building!  2. Exploring real-world examples through the West Midlands National Park as a case study, testing cross-sectoral policy drivers, challenges, and opportunities. Historic England recently released a report highlighting the essential role of heritage investment in revitalizing English Towns — a stance that aligns firmly with AR Urbanism’s ongoing commitment to the integration of heritage in urban regeneration projects. The case for investing in heritage and conservation is compelling from several sustainability standpoints: 1) In terms of structure and materials, reusing and preserving existing buildings can dramatically lower levels of embodied carbon released compared to new construction. 2) In social terms, the preservation and enhancement of heritage structures and environments can add cultural continuity and support community memory and identity. 3) And thirdly, successful heritage-based town or village centre regeneration actively contributes to economic regeneration. However, our hands-on experience in towns like Boston (Lincolnshire), King's Lynn (West Norfolk), and Shrub Hill (Worcester) reveals a significant challenge. The scale of heritage assets can often pose significant barriers to effective regeneration. While Historic England's Heritage Action Zone and Local Councils’ funding is crucial for unlocking potential and kickstarting key projects, these funds are limited. Homes England and Heritage England have demonstrated what they are capable of when they join forces through their partnership on Bristol’s Temple Quarter and York Central. Aligning their objectives further, as well as pooling resources and seeing more collaboration between these already closely linked bodies could help to build momentum and ensure long-term success in heritage conservation in urban planning. Historic assets are more than just buildings — they are the tangible connections to a place’s past, contributing to its unique character and charm. By advocating for contextual urbanism, we emphasize the importance of blending new developments with the existing historical fabric, creating spaces that resonate with local communities and enhance their pride in their surroundings. The "heritage role in regenerative urbanism" goes beyond mere preservation; it's about celebrating and integrating the rich tapestry of local history into vibrant, modern communities. Parisian Urban Planning ++ [improving communities] Paris is often described as an exemplar of Haussmannian urban planning, a style that emerged during the mid-19th century under the direction of Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann. This transformation of Paris involved the creation of wide boulevards, public parks, and a more organized street grid, which collectively facilitated better movement and improved public health. Paris is rich in parks, squares, and gardens, which provide essential green spaces for recreation, relaxation, and community gatherings.

The Australian Institute of Architects was thrilled to collaborate with the Planning Institute of Australia, the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), and the Design Institute of Australia at a Brisbane City Council workshop focused on the ongoing evolution of the city centre. Councillor Krista Adams, Deputy Mayor Brisbane City Council opened the session with an inspiring address, while the Urban Renewal Brisbane team skillfully facilitated discussions on the next phase of the city centre's development, with a focus on leveraging the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games to: - Strengthen partnerships - Align key priorities - Create a lasting legacy for all This workshop builds upon the Green Pathways, Gold Places advocacy, emphasising the importance of collaboration in shaping a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable Brisbane.
