Borealis Invests €4.5 Million in Porvoo Steam Cracker Borealis plans to invest €4.5 million in the cracker furnaces of its olefins unit in Porvoo, #Finland. This project, Borealis said, is to ensure that the Porvoo #steamcracker, which is part of a highly integrated #petrochemical complex, can increase the share of renewable and recycled raw materials used in its base chemicals – i.e., ethylene and propylene – production. The Porvoo investment, expected to be completed in 2025, follows last year’s completion of a major cracker furnace update at Borealis’ site in Stenungsund, Sweden. The steam cracker in Porvoo has a nameplate capacity of 430 kt/y ethylene and 263 kt/y #propylene. With the investment, three of the ten cracker furnaces in the olefins unit will be modified to enable a total annual production of 120 kt of base chemicals based on renewable and recycled feedstocks. 📢 We announce that NextChem (Sustainable Technology Solutions), through its nitrogen technology licensor Stamicarbon, has been awarded licensing and equipment supply contracts for a urea melt plant in China by Jiangsu Huachang Chemical Co. The plant, to be located in Zhangjiagang (Jiangsu province), will have a capacity of 1,860 MTPD and use Stamicarbon’s Ultra-Low Energy (ULE) design. The proprietary Ultra-Low Energy Design allows for heat supply in the form of high-pressure steam to be used three times instead of two. This heat recovery scheme results in a 35% reduction in steam consumption and a 16% decrease in cooling water use compared to the traditional CO2 stripping process. With two plants currently in operation, the Ultra-Low Energy design is demonstrating unparalleled energy savings in the market, a result of Stamicarbon’s continuous commitment to innovation and excellence in the urea fertilizer technology. In another #CircularEconomy win, Suvo Strategic Minerals (ASX: SUV) has transformed a zero-carbon #NickelSlag into a high-strength, low-carbon cement. Three samples were tested at the Makassar State University (UNM) in Indonesia, demonstrating “exceptional” results with the highest strength reaching 37.5 megapascals (Mpa) after only seven days. Given the production of cement requires about 3.2 billion tonnes of CO2 per year, representing about 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, turning nickel slag into low-carbon cement could offer a large market opportunity. “We are excited to have commenced this workstream in Indonesia testing the byproduct of one of the country’s largest miners, with our ultimate goal being to manufacture an environmentally-friendly and low-carbon alternative to Portland cement,” Suvo executive chair Aaron Banks said. 💬As Plato said, “The beginning is the most important part of any work.” Today in CEPSA we are transforming again our plans into action by beginning construction of our pioneering and unique isopropyl alcohol (IPA) plant, in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva. This plant will ensure the supply of a widely used product, perhaps best known as the base for hydroalcoholic gels, including hand sanitiser, fundamental for saving lives. Here, there will be the potential to produce 80,000 tons of IPA every year, thanks to a €75 million investment, with construction expected to finish in 2025! The strategic location of the plant fosters industrial and economic synergies for the project. It will be seamlessly integrated into our existing chemical plant premises and Cepsa’s Energy Park in Palos. This distinctiveness within the sector strengthens our industrial ecosystem, enhancing its resilience and diversity. Furthermore, it provides the opportunity to produce from circular and bio-feedstocks, and it will be linked to the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, CEPSA’s flagship project in Positive Motion, aligning with our commitment to transform our portfolio towards environmentally friendly products. This plant will help to accelerate the ecological transition in our country. I was delighted to be joined by the Regional Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines of Andalucía, Jorge Paradela and the Mayor of Palos de la Frontera, Carmelo Romero, and many more at today’s event especially given that this moment has such a significant impact on Europe and Spain: - For Europe, where investment into industry is currently under pressure, we are taking the necessary steps forward to be able to keep growing aligned with the European Green Deal. - For Spain, this is the first plant to produce isopropyl alcohol and an opportunity to become a chemical industrial leader in this transition. This is a treasured moment which means a lot to me. This is the first project I bring to life as CEO of Cepsa Quimica. Huge thanks to everyone that attended today’s event and to my colleagues for their passion and perseverance, helping to turn this vision into a reality over the last few years – and for the work that is set to come. This project is a clear example our #PositiveMotion strategy and clearly aligns with our purpose. This step also emphasises that 2024 is the year of construction for Cepsa. It follows the progress made in February this year when we announced the start of construction at our 2G biofuels plant in collaboration with Bio-Oils Energy S.A. Without a doubt, we live in a world full of uncertainties, environmental, industrial and human challenges. With these challenges on the horizon, at Cepsa we have decided to bet on the future – a better future and more sustainable future in which Andalucia and Spain plays a leading role. Because as the great Abraham Lincoln said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” #CepsaQuimica #Sustainability #Innovation
