It's World Homeless Day today. Women's Community Shelters CEO Annabelle Daniel OAM shares this message: Women’s Community Shelters recognises that domestic and family violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and their dependent children. It is vital to recognise that in a housing affordability crisis, women may choose to stay in abusive relationships if they cannot find somewhere safe, secure and affordable to go. Women’s Community Shelters has grown our shelter network bed nights by 30% in the last twelve months, but the percentage of clients we have been unable to assist has grown by 92% in the same period. Providing shelter through crisis, transitional and long-term housing prevents more women becoming homeless. We need to invest in ‘whole of society’ solutions to prevent more women becoming homeless this year and into the future. #WorldHomelessDay #homelessness #DVawareness #DVprevention

Did you know that 76,000 children under 18 experienced homelessness last year? Many were fleeing domestic violence, abuse, or neglect at home. More than 25,000 children remained homeless even after seeking help from specialist support agencies, and a further 19,833 were turned away due to a severe lack of resources and the overwhelming demand faced by the sector. At BaptistCare HopeStreet, we see firsthand how vital it is to have a safe place to call home and how violence and trauma can drastically change a child's life path. We urgently need national and state-based prevention strategies, fresh thinking, resources, and funding from all levels of government to allow providers like BaptistCare to do what we do best: offer life-transforming support and hope. If you or someone you know is facing homelessness, learn how we can help at https://lnkd.in/gJYZuBQT #BaptistCareHopeStreet #HomelessnessAustralia #PeopleFirst #EveryChildMatters

Housing is a huge barrier for women trying to escape intimate partner violence. For those who do manage to flee, they often get caught in a long, confusing process to secure housing for themselves and their families. Organizations across California are coming together to support houseless domestic violence survivors, but their work is in danger. How does housing policy need to change, and what can be done to ensure that survivors don't lose critical resources like emergency shelters and transitional housing programs? Watch or listen to "Domestic Violence Survivor & Homeless Too? A CA Cohort Shows What Can Be Done" on public television and community radio, YouTube and podcast platforms. Joining us are Krista Colón of California Partnership To End Domestic Violence and two survivors of domestic violence-related homelessness who now work as advocates, Teniecka Drake of Rainbow Services and Yenni Rivera Martinez of LAHSA (Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority). #DV #HouselessPopulation #Housing
