John Oliver of Last Week Tonight analyzed the food delivery apps in his usual hilarious way last Sunday on HBO Max. Watch it. If you didn't already know, it will become clear to you that third-party delivery is not the right way to do restaurant delivery. Probably the funniest / saddest part is when Oliver shows pandemic-era ads of Grubhub framing itself as the savior of the restaurant industry saying in 2020 "together we can save restaurants." Meanwhile, those restaurants who wouldn't sign with them were listed as closed or not accepting orders on the marketplace. While these kinds of behaviors have largely been legislated away, the apps continue to put a huge cost burden on restaurants in the form of commissions, advertising, and chargebacks. These apps are great as an ordering marketplace - a modern mall food court for hungry people to find food. But there are better ways to fulfill these orders. While consumers clearly value the convenience -- putting up with errors, cold food, delays, and expense to get food delivered -- what if they could get what they want without the bad experience? And what if the delivery drivers were better off as a result of offering this service? And what if the restaurant itself actually made money on delivery without introducing operational complexity? Empower Delivery can make these things so. https://lnkd.in/gC3TcfRJ

Food delivery Apps. John Oliver on Last Week Tonight addresses some of the realities of food delivery app ecosystem. I used to be surprised - by now I have accepted as a reality - that general population have no clue and no interest on how the economics work and the commissions paid. John Oliver take will help create awareness - this video has +1.5m views in less than 24 hours. His best advice - for your favourite restaurants call them and ask the best way to order from them if you cannot be in location His worst advice - tipping as default for basic service and not as a sign of customer delight. Whoever disrupts a market that results on incumbents losing money AND themselves losing money would be called an idiot. But making money in that particular market is not in the core activity but rather in the company valuation. The success is measured into becoming an Unicorn and have an IPO rather than running a sustainable business. Such businesses beside the founders and high tech need a number of things * investors that are willing to burn money for a long time hoping for a large payout that comes later but particularly at IPO - initial public offering. * restaurants that do not really understand their P&L structure and consider platforms a necessary evil. If you look at pattern in platform results number of restaurants grow ahead of GMV (gross merchandise value) and Revenues grow ahead of GMV resulting in lower revenue at higher cost for many restaurants. * drivers that under the promise of freedom or even worse forced by the employment market to become involuntary entrepreneurs are willing to make compromises and take all the risks. One must look only at proposition 22 in Califormia in Oct 2020 where such platforms lobby raised to 200m $ to prevent having drivers qualified as workers. Note that Proposition 22 came at a critical time just one month ahead of DoorDash IPO. * customer tips with platforms promoting drivers as the hero and creating social pressure to tip no matter what, rather than properly compensating the drivers. As a side note to Proposition 22 in Nov 2020 the main platforms that successfully lobbied to keep drivers as independent contractors after spending 200m $: DoorDash - with IPO in Dec 2020 that is currently trading at aprox 25% below IPO not before losing up to 60% of IPO value one year ago Lyft - that is trading 75% below IPO in 2019 and about the same after the hype of Prop 22 passing Grubhub that lost valuation and it was acquired by Just Eat Takeaway. Just Eat have lost 80% valuation vs 5 year ago and about 90% vs the hype of end of 2020. Uber that was trading below IPO ahead of Prop 22 then boosted above and then later traded again below 50% of IPO value. Now only Uber is enjoying a new hype particularly since they started to use more often words like cash flow and profit in their financial statements. https://lnkd.in/d6WWhi5x
