"The truth is, no human is immune from fear or adversity." Last night, New Orleans Saints legend Steve Gleason accepted the 2024 Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs for his contributions to ALS awareness. This was his message:

This moment brought me to tears. What a terrible disease ALS is. The single tear that came from him shows the feelings he still holds inside of him. He is truly living every day to the fullest and for his family. This is what conquering adversity looks like.

To see Steve's courage and passion for life should inspire us all.... The statue that sits outside of the Superdome of him blocking that punt when the Saints returned for their first game in the Superdome in 21 months after the devastation from Hurricane Katrina was the beginning of Steve lifting and inspiring the New Orleans community. He continues to do it every single day... Keep fighting Steve, keep showing us how to live, we got your back, always. #WhoDatNation

I was diagnosed with ALS a little over two years after Steve, and I am proud to call him a friend. What I have learned through my 11 year journey is that 90% of the pALS ( people with ALS) I have met show incredible courage in the face of this devastating disease. Most pALS live by the Team Gleason motto, #NoWhiteFlags!

His speech was so inspirational. He has been so brave, resilient, and courageous through his fight with ALS. I couldn't agree more with the sentiment that no human is immune from adversity. We innately choose to compare our lives to others. In doing this we minimize the reality that we should all be grateful for our journey. No human avoids adversity or fear, we either learn how to work with it or deny it exists. Good luck with living in denial.

For anyone who hasn’t watched Gleason (the documentary), you now have weekend plans! I saw it years ago and it’s stuck with me. I cried, I smiled, I laughed, I cried some more. It’s beyond moving! And heck, donate if you can 👉🏼 teamgleason.org

His words and the video of his journey were incredibly moving. It is easy in this world to take things for granted. It is also easy to get in the rabbit hole of feeling sorry for yourself when there is adversity. Mr. Gleason's fight, his never give up attitude, his positive approach to life and all it brings, and his effort to use his situation to help others are all wonderful lessons in life. And, a shout out to Front Office Sports for continually highlighting the positive impact of sports and athletes!

"My view is that the fears and adversities we encounter are our opportunity to accept what is and explore what is on the other side of fear to grow stronger, better, and have peace of mind." STRONG message. Love this.

This was the most inspiring acceptance speech I have ever listened to. This is what life is all about and I’m grateful to have heard this by someone with strength we may never truly understand. God bless him and his family.
