It is always interesting to testify before government bodies, whether they be State legislative committees in Frankfort, Jackson, or Baton Rouge, or City Council meetings here in New Orleans. As many times as I have done this, it is still nerve-wracking, despite the fact that I know the issues inside and out. But the hard part is communicating the key points in an impactful and efficient way. I know that what I say is not always heard, but it is always relevant to the discussion now and importantly, in the future. What was it today? Instead of summarizing, I will just post this New Orleans Times-Picayune/Advocate article by Tony McAuley - https://lnkd.in/gDj2Xm2F The interesting thing about this issue is the intersection of neighborhood zoning issues with public health. It also brings up issues of what values do we as citizens of New Orleans want our city to represent. Are we going to educate ourselves about the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke as the leading cause of smoking related cancer and chronic disease. Do we pull ourselves up from 49th in state health rankings, or do we promote business interest over all else, even our own health.

FARE Idaho wants to make sure that restaurants and bars are aware of Senate Bill 1381 regarding liquor license legislation and the impacts to resort cities. FARE Idaho has not taken a stance on this legislation, but wanted to share the bill information. Senate Bill 1381 Statement of Purpose: "Idaho’s liquor license quota system is based on a city’s residential population. In resort cities, where populations fluctuate widely based on tourism, residential population is a poor measure of the actual number of people in town at a given time. This bill would create a resort city restaurant liquor license, allowing up to three additional liquor licenses for restaurants in resort cities, subject to approval by the city. The majority of the restaurant’s revenue must be from food, and liquor may only be sold during the hours food is served." Learn more about SB 1381 at: https://lnkd.in/gF9_-ZYg

Lots of the crusty Golf Club Set on here tell me Scotch Whisky is 'struggling'. I suppose if you only manage to DOUBLE your profits in a Year, there is some dark corner of Scotland where this would be regarded as hopeless... The truth is, Scotch Whisky is booming but you do get the odd plonker who is confusing 'sales' with 'value'. They all look to Diageo rather than the other half, who are doing a bit better! The recent, ludicrously-expensive launch by The Macallan, a couple of week ago, it's already Sold-out, in most places. The owners are a £1 billion turnover concern, on their own, with only 4 or 5 Scotch Whisky brands. There are now THOUSANDS of different Scotch Whisky bottlings, and even some of the tiny, incredibly niche ones pandering to a few hundred people, are £multi-million concerns. The Campbeltown Scotch, from one of the other Distilleries there, I used to use at tastings, because it was so excellent and cheap, it's now £200 a bottle. If you're driving, A visit to Campbeltown takes AGES. It's away on a peninsula and it was very economically depressed, after the Scotch Whisky boom ended decades ago and dozens of Distilleries closed. Campbeltown found out that 'trickle down economics' didn’t really work for them. Only a few Distilleries remained, including this fantastic one and now, Campbeltown is on the up. Although it's still amazingly cheap to buy a house in, this will change, as many new Distilleries are planned, as are developments, in existing places. Nobody knows anything about Campbeltown. When are we having a Scotch Whisky Tourism Strategy and Budget? #ScotchWhiskyTruths

So it's all eyes on Iowa. Once every four years the Midwestern state takes centre stage as the Republican caucuses take place across its towns and cities. That's the headline, but what else is going on this chilly January morning? 🎖 The race for the Republican nomination starts here. Nikki Haley is building momentum but Donald Trump is still expected to take the vote in Iowa. But will the ex-President be able to hold out again the more moderate voices in the party, with New Hampshire next in line to caucus? 📈 Post-Christmas trading results continue to be released, with M&S and Tesco last week announcing stronger figures than expected. This data influences share prices and impacts markets, so watch out for the knock-on effect of a surge in popularity of pigs in blankets. 🌿 Speaking of those meaty festive treats, after the feast comes a move to plant-based diets as many embrace #veganuary. January is a month for new starts and lifestyle changes, and the plant-based movement grows in popularity every year. What are you doing to encourage or support behaviour change? 🐁 January is a good time to have a sort out, and in Wales a mouse has taken this to heart, helping a retired postman by tidying his shed at night. Perhaps the Republican party could employ the mouse to help organise its messy factions? https://lnkd.in/eZ2btBqz Have a good week!

As the summer months approach, driving under the influence will become statistically more prevalent, and more arrests will be made. Our solution to deter participants from drinking is to monitor them through the SCRAM CAM bracelet. This encourages compliance with court orders and enforces accountability. I work in beverage applications, so this year I'm going to go through some national beverage holidays, enjoy! January 16th is Prohibition Remembrance Day: For some PRE-history: 1657, The general court of Massachusetts bans the sale of alcohol to Native Americans and during the1800s, the first attempt to ban alcohol by Protestants was made. 1918, Congress enforces the Wartime Prohibition Act, banning alcohol above 1.28%. Prohibition in the United States was a nationwide constitutional ban on the production, importation, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages from 1920 to 1933. Then "finally" in 1933 the 21st amendment lifted the alcohol ban by overruling the 18th amendment. - FUNFACT: Prohibition cost the federal government about $11 billion in taxes, and it took over $300 million to legalize the bill. Today there is a decrease in alcohol consumption, for health and personal choices: Low - No ABV
