With today's announcement by The White House of the establishment of a Council on Supply Chain Resilience and new actions to secure supply chains, it's worth reupping recommendations from the Aerospace Industries Association on securing the #aerospaceanddefense (A&D) supply chain. Remember, not all supply chains are made equal. A&D applications typically require high purity, aerospace grade type raw materials which rely on qualified processing and smelting operations. These resources are growing in usage and are often finite, in addition to being both labor and energy intensive (and if you don't think partners and allies are important to the sector, let's talk about titanium sponge). The A&D supply chain is unique, and is shared between the commercial aerospace and defense sector. However, the commercial sector dominates in scale. Most of the #aerospaceanddefense supply chain ends up in commercial applications, not defense. AIA's global supply chain recommendations include: ➡ Further developing an understanding of the unique supply chain challenges of the aerospace and defense industry ➡ Strengthening the resilience of the A&D supply chain, including domestic specialty manufacturers and unique components and minerals critical to aerospace and defense systems ➡ Address regulatory and compliance demands for qualifying new suppliers by advocating for U.S. regulatory and statutory requirements that promote secure suppliers and reflect the industry specifications for aerospace grade applications (or raw materials). Today's announcement is a good marker for further efforts to secure the #aerospaceanddefense supply chain. Lots of work to be done. We can't take our foot off the gas quite yet. Two provocative comments : · You should ALWAYS talk and VISIT your customers … not only now ! · Why to consider those talks only at light of cost ie price reduction ! This is not the alpha and omega … and very often, the global economical effectiveness of the sourcing process is much more complex ! Too often the search of price reduction tend to mask an upper lack of efficiency ! The cost you pay on supplier bill is only a variable percent of the global cost of acquisition ; instead of talking to suppliers to just ask them more pricing efforts I would rather seen incentive to talk to PARTNERS as how to grow together in being each more efficient : challenging them on higher value packages, streamlining S/C in reducing the number of various suppliers and the inherent hurdles in managing so many, being sure to have the right set up where critical suppliers are really mastering their ‘piece of art’, both technically as on manufacturing (and here sometime a vertical integration of all critical technobricks is key !) … Having also a local, efficient supply base is also sometime not only SUSTAINABLE btw, but also an easier and simpler way to be more efficient as any issue can be solved rapidly thanks proximity of people, locations and cultures ! Not necessarily aligned with the doxa of #LCC, low-cost countries … Good sens should prevail and above all, mutual trust and confidence ! Interested to have your thoughts …
