Meet Esmeralda. 👋 A single mom with a four-year-old son and working as a stylist and makeup artist in Etzatlán, Mexico, her dream has always been to provide security and a home for her son. She recently completed her payments for a lot in the Las Fuentes community in Etzatlán and is now a landowner! Now, she's planning to build her home and create a "comforting place where there's joy and a shared love." We are scaling this work across Mexico with the help of investors and philanthropists. So more people like Esmeralda can secure safe homes and communities in which to thrive. Find ways to get involved here: https://lnkd.in/gFC4cYqm

Some of you may know, and many likely don't, that my parents-in-law fund and manage an orphanage in Mozambique; one of the poorest countries in the world. Their non-profit organization, Least of These Ministries, utilizes 100% of donations to fund the orphanage named after my mother-in-law: Rebecca's Home. These donations pay for school for the kids (it isn't free in Mozambique), new clothes, shoes and beds, medical care, job training, staff salaries, building structures like dorms and wells, maintenance and repairs, food, holiday celebrations and anything else the kids need. Currently, there are about 50 children living at Rebecca's Home. Since its start in 2007, hundreds of Mozambique's "least of these" have been helped at Rebecca's Home. Recently, I was asked to make a video using some current pictures sent by Pastor Cebola (he's the man who runs the orphanage locally). Please take a look and see all the good that is being done there. And if you want to get involved financially, or otherwise, please let me know and I'll give you details on how to make a difference in these kids' lives. Our actions shape who we are... And this idea fascinates me. Because our actions reflect our deepest goals, intentions, and values. Only 2 more days until 30 of us from the UK branch of MacArtney Underwater Technology Group take on The Kiltwalk Aberdeen. There are 20 of us doing the Mighty Stride (18 Miles) and 10 doing the Wee Wander (4 Miles). We are doing this walk to help support Guide dogs and any donation you can make would be greatly received. Donations can be made at the following link. https://lnkd.in/eZ6YND-T Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss that has a significant impact on their daily lives. Of those, around 180,000 rarely leave their homes alone and lead lonely, isolated lives. Guide Dogs works for a world where people with sight loss are never left out of life, for a world where being blind or partially sighted is not what defines you. A world with enough support to make the challenges of sight loss no barrier to fulfilling hopes and dreams. #kiltwalk #guidedogs #charity #subsea #underwater

Why It Matters:
I’d love to see you at this amazing event coming up on May 4. Vana Carmona shares her research on Maine and the area we now call Westbrook, Gorham, and Portland. Uncovering enslavement in Maine and Westbrook in the 17th & 18th Centuries, with Vana Carmona of The Prince Project Sat, May 4, 1:30-2:30pm Westbrook Community Center, Oak Rm 426 Bridge St, Westbrook, ME Ten years ago, Vana Carmona discovered the gravestone of a man named Prince near several of her family’s burial plots. Learning he had been enslaved by her ancestors, she embarked on a historical quest to find others. Soon she found out that enslavement in Maine was more common than she ever believed. Moreover, many of our founding fathers were also complicit in human trafficking from Africa. Today, Vana's research has evolved into The Prince Project, now a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization. It has a database of almost 2000 people of color who lived in Maine prior to 1800, including Westbrook. The result has been a unique uncovering of enslavement in Maine, a history that is often misconstrued - if not ignored. Come learn about the history of Westbrook's early residents and their involvement in chattel slavery that was not made illegal in the State of Massachusetts (including the lands we now call Maine) until 1783.

Lisa Eisen, Co-President of Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, encourages Jewish funders to stay focused, committed and courageous in this fraught moment. "Ceding our spot at the table of humanity will not serve us, now or in the future. Our job as funders and practitioners is not to unravel the sacred bonds of our tribal and prophetic responsibilities, but rather to hold both. To choose both." Explore Lisa's insights on how Jewish values can guide funders on a path forward ➡ https://lnkd.in/eHSRPPez.

For Nonprofit Quarterly, Kavon Ward and Hannah Green of Where Is My Land published “Where Is My Land? The Struggle for Black Land Recovery”. Inside, Where Is My Land discuss their work using advocacy and legislation to return stolen land back to Black families. “By 1910 the amount of land owned by Black Americans was as high as 19 million acres, or about 14 percent of all titled land. By 1997, however, Black Americans owned only 1.3 percent of all titled land, a 90 percent decline. The loss has been conservatively estimated at $326 billion, reinforcing the nation’s enormous racial wealth gap.” While they have secured wins for folks like the Bruce Family of Manhattan Beach, other families face serious obstacles when it comes to receiving reparatory justice for stolen property. In this article, Where Is My Land unpack the history of Black land loss, efforts toward reparations as well as resistance, and also opportunities to resource this powerful movement. #LVxMP https://lnkd.in/g_hkn-JP
