"To care is to make space within ourselves for another, without dictating what that space looks like." Multilingual creativity brings freedom of expression and identity to those who are often denied it. Mymona Bibi leads World Writes, our group for people who speak English as another language. They share stories, write creatively across languages, and build community – which is particularly important to a demographic which has been, and often continues to be, displaced. What does it mean to be a language advocate? With the U.N. International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples coming up on August 9, our Senior Executive Lorie Roule has been reflecting: what are we even advocating for? As a fellow advocate put it: "More voices." More voices. That’s what we need to celebrate and increase multilingualism. One such voice in that conversation: linguist and children’s author Victor D. O. Santos, Ph.D. and his marvelous illustrator Anna Forlati. His latest illustrated book, What Makes Us Human, selected by UNESCO as the official book for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, asks us what it is that makes us human. His answer (spoiler alert): language. It's so worth a read to find out why. In the spirit of “more voices,” whose voice would you like to highlight? And how will you use your own voice in your community to amplify the importance of language? #endangeredlanguages #InternationalDayoftheWorldsIndigenousPeoples

Language access goes beyond words—it’s about social justice, identity, culture, and dignity. In some countries, it reflects the lasting impact of colonialism, where dominant languages overshadowed local ones. In others, politics adds layers of complexity to the conversation. According to Ethnologue, 44% of the world’s languages are endangered, and Africa is home to many of them. These languages are at risk of extinction, taking with them rich and amazing cultural and historical knowledge. As professionals in the language industry, we are in a unique position to make a difference. By integrating endangered languages into education and technology, we can help protect and sustain Africa’s rich linguistic diversity. Promoting and preserving these languages contributes to building a future where every voice matters. Let’s work together to make that happen.

#CrossCulturalAwareness #LanguageAndEmotion #SameWordsDifferentInterpretations #LanguageTeaching Emotions can be embodied, personal, and individual, yet also semiotically mediated, shaping our social identity (see: https://lnkd.in/eKWH9dD3). In a language like German, we use specific adjectives to articulate feelings of safety, stability, and trust. For instance, terms like "geborgen" (protected) and "sicher" (safe) carry significant emotional weight. However, the embodied experience of living in a region fraught with conflict and the constant threat of war profoundly influences how individuals interpret and respond to these concepts, contrasting sharply with those raised in more stable environments. Understanding these dynamics is vital for effective cross-cultural communication, especially when discussing sensitive topics such as “security”, whether in foreign language classrooms or in multicultural societies. Acknowledging the diverse emotional landscapes shaped by individual and collective experiences can foster greater empathy and awareness in our interactions.
