Leonora Carrington, a celebrated British-born Mexican artist, created a profound piece of art titled “L’epidoptera” in 1968. This butterfly artwork, a surrealistic mixed media creation, is a powerful representation of Carrington’s unique artistic vision. “L’epidoptera” is a tempera and charcoal on Masonite painting. It showcases Carrington’s ability to transcend the ordinary and delve into a world of fantasy and symbolism. Carrington was a key figure in the Surrealist movement. Her work often explored themes of liberation, mysticism, and the feminine divine. “L’epidoptera” is no exception. This artwork represents a Goddess and butterfly. The Goddess arms raised in a gesture that denotes the voices of protest for freedom and the butterfly denotes freedom. The painting was created during a time of intense political unrest in Mexico City, where Carrington was living. The student movement was experiencing state persecution and armed repression. Carrington, deeply affected by these events, expressed her solidarity with the student opposition forces through her art. “L’epidoptera” is a testament to Carrington’s belief in the power of art to challenge the status quo and give voice to the oppressed. It’s a celebration of freedom and resistance, captured in the ethereal form of a butterfly goddess. It’s a reflection of a turbulent time in history and a powerful statement of solidarity. It’s a testament to Carrington’s belief in the transformative power of art. #LeonoraCarrington #Surrealism #ArtBlog #ArtHistory #SurrealArt #FineArt #ArtCritique #ArtAnalysis #ArtAppreciation #ArtLovers #ArtCommunity #ArtWorld #ArtistsOnInstagram #ArtOfTheDay #InstaArt #Butterflies #Butterfly #ButterflyLovers #ButterflyWorld #ButterflyEffect #ButterflyEffectUniverse

Collecting art is an incredible way to experience contemporary culture and everyday life. Art can be not only a decorative object, it can be something that has meaning and connects you with what is happening around you, where you feel your reflection, resonance, what is or becomes important for you. By owning art, you also have a personal connection with the creator - by purchasing a piece of contemporary art, you are also investing in the creator, who continues to influence his works and their value changes through his active creative action. Through a work of art, a unique relationship is created between the buyer and the artist that is not really present with many other objects. When you buy art from living and working artists, mutual trust is built at the same time. This is a very meaningful action for both you and the artist.

Beyond Beauty: Why Art Matters in America The soaring skylines of New York, the vibrant murals of Chicago, the haunting melody of jazz drifting through a New Orleans night – art isn't just pretty things in museums. It captures our triumphs and tragedies, our dreams and anxieties, painting a living portrait of who we are and who we aspire to be. **Investing in Our Creative Soul** Supporting the arts isn't just a luxury; it's an investment in the future of America. By nurturing our artists, fostering artistic education, and making art accessible to all, we cultivate a nation that is not only economically prosperous but also vibrant, empathetic, and constantly evolving. So, the next time you pass by a bustling street performance or wander through a museum, remember – art isn't just something to admire. It's the beating heart of American culture, a force that shapes who we are and who we can become. Let's keep the colors of creativity flowing, for in them lies the true spirit of America.

Art House SF welcomes our first full-time employee! Her name is Peppy and she's a Pomeranian puppy from Latvia. Even though we're not part of the Frameline festival this year in SF, we do think that Peppy looks great on the red carpet :) On a more serious note, what do art dealers like me really do? Let's unravel this mystery. 1. Art gallerists vs. art dealers. Most art galleries in the US no longer buy art from artists. They exhibit art and if it sells, share 50/50 with the artists. This is called a "consignment model". Galleries take less of a risk, but they also invest less in artists. 2. Primary vs. secondary market art dealers. Primary-market art dealers buy art directly from contemporary artists and then resell it. A popular model in the early 20th century, but not anymore. Primary-market dealers often work with lesser-known artists, promote them, and build long-term relationships. Secondary market dealers resell artwork of famous, well-known artists. The few I know usually work in the $50k+ price range, and they'd like to call their art "investment art." I'm a primary art dealer. I purchase work from artists directly, which means: a. I believe in them b. We're able to offer affordable prices (no middlemen, no hype) c. I'm committed to them longer-term Hope that helps. What questions do you have about the art market?
