Another great hit from Ken Clark. Product is one of the three “absolutes” for success. Great brands need to focus attention to deliver three key things (per Elliott Hill) - 1) build great, innovative product, 2) tell compelling, connecting stories around them, and 3) bring them to life at retail. While these types of product collections are exciting and fun, great planning and care is required. The consumers see a lot of them these days. Be careful to not be “me too” or seen as not authentic. Know the consumer. Dig deep for the insights. Get the product and moment right.

Around this time of year our #SportBroadcast post-grad students, from the outgoing cohort, start releasing their final project documentaries to the public. We ask them to make a 15minute sports documentary for their dissertation, and once they’ve handed in their films & had them marked, we encourage them to post their films on you tube, to put themselves & their work out there. The documentary they produce is hopefully (if they’ve been concentrating!) a culmination of all their skills learnt on the course; filming, gathering & organising content, video editing, storyboarding, storytelling, researching, fixing contributors, interviewing, sourcing archive, choosing locations, lighting, creating graphics, writing scripts, editing sound & working to a duration & a deadline. Over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing student work on here. Please take a look if you’ve time, and, if you like the films, let the students know, give them feedback; positive, negative, constructive. They need it. Be gentle, this is the first piece of long form content they have ever created. They are at the start of their careers, they are looking for work. Talking of work, my work is done, they are all yours now!

Imagine, if I was to organise a business event, charge you a lot of money for the privilege of getting in and then fleece you for drinks and food – would you attend? You might if the content & the experience were memorable. Time to put the paying spectator at the centre of this experience. So let's make tennis a better spectator sport. Try a single serve game. First serve doesn’t go in, its point over and move on to the next point. This would speed up the game considerably and make it a lot more attractive to watch. What about reducing the number of sets from five to three for the grand slams? Same logic. I play tennis, but I don’t want to sit and watch two players slog it out for up to five hours. Its boring.
