Helane Crowell, CEO of Saie, highlights the power of being in the right place and the importance of networking. Building her brand in New York gave her unparalleled access to opportunities, connections, and a community that helped bring her vision to life. https://trib.al/nQ0gFSs
They have this thing where I tell myself that I just have to talk to 70 people. I make a list in Google Sheets. That's where I keep everything organized and I literally just cross people off the list. And then when I talked to them, I ask for who their recommendation is for me to talk to. So I get then I get another name, maybe I get 2 names and then I just keep going. My mantra is just get up one more day, then the next person. And you'll get there for folks who are listening to this thinking, oh, I want to do this too, I want to start a business. What kind of timeline are you talking about? I mean, 70 copies doesn't happen overnight. We'll say speed. I would say I have a huge advantage because I'm in New York City. Malcolm Gladwell talks about this, about how important it is to be near opportunity. And I think that's a huge part of my success was that being in New York, it gave me proximity. I could do 5 meetings in a day if I wanted to. And I did because I like to work fast and. I definitely credit my childhood in sports to this. I, I don't know when you, when you play sports and you play sports competitively like you're in it to win it.
🌆 Why Getting Involved in Your Local Community Matters 🌆
Moving to California and joining the Orange Chamber of Commerce has been a game-changer! At my first event, I connected with Aaron Schulze, the Economic Development Manager for the City of Orange, California. He invited me to the Economic Development Roundtable, where local business owners and city reps come together to discuss developments in our community. Not only am I staying up-to-date on what’s happening around me, but I’m also able to contribute and learn from other local pros.
Being involved with your community isn't just good for networking—it's about making informed decisions for your business and having a direct impact on the place you live and work. 💼✨
If you’re looking to build connections, stay in the know, and make a real difference, consider joining local organizations like your chamber of commerce or city groups. You’ll be surprised by the impact it can have!

🌟 The Power of Networking Across 🌟
Issa Rae once shared a piece of networking advice that changed the game:
“I think the misconception about networking is that you’re always supposed to network up. But it’s really about networking across… Who’s next to you? Who’s just as hungry as you are?”
This advice is especially crucial for Black professionals as we navigate spaces that often weren’t built with us in mind. Networking isn’t just about reaching out to people above us—it’s about building with the people beside us.
💡 Why Networking Across Matters:
✅ Shared Experiences: The people walking a similar path understand your struggles and triumphs. Together, you can strategize and grow.
✅ Collective Power: When we collaborate with other ambitious Black professionals, we create opportunities that elevate everyone involved.
✅ Community Building: Networking across fosters trust, solidarity, and a sense of belonging—something we all need, especially in these challenging times.
I’m building on this principle: to create a space where Black professionals, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders can come together, share resources, and thrive as a collective.
✨ Imagine the possibilities if we all worked together:
• Supporting each other’s ventures.
• Sharing knowledge and opportunities.
• Building wealth and leaving legacies.
This isn’t just about individual success—it’s about community success. Let’s network across, build together, and rise as one. ✊🏽

What's your "go-to" question at networking events? Mine is "What was the highlight of your year so far? What would not have happened for your client, if you were not involved?"
In American business culture, people are not supposed to brag. It's about "the team."
That's hogwash in networking.
When I ask these questions I learn:
The kinds of clients you work with
The types of problems you solve
The various solutions you offer
Then, no matter what the person says, I follow up with "That's so interesting. Tell me how you do that, in case I know someone who might be interested in how you work."
Now the new contact can be more granular and brag, which they don't get to do often enough. Everyone loves to talk about themselves.
Looking forward to TWO networking events today: Carly Hariton invited me to her #BNI chapter, plus Women Owned Law is having a cocktail reception, hosted by Helene Pangalos and Paige Zandri.
