The Memorial Day tournament officially kicks off at the wonderful Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio today. In a weekend that provides the opportunity for spectators to witness the world’s best golfers, I can’t help but think how golf has taught me invaluable life lessons that directly apply to my daily role in employee benefits consulting. I’m sure this is also a thought Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy will have in their minds all weekend… All jokes aside, its important for us to apply lessons learned from things we enjoy to other passions we have in our lives. Here are a few lessons I’ve learned from the fairway that are just as relevant to the office: ⛳ 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 & 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: The game of golf teaches the importance of developing a strategy and plan for each and every hole. Just as each hole provides a different approach, so does the development of a comprehensive benefit package that meets the needs of your population. At MB, our goal is to tailor customized solutions that address the unique challenges our clients face. 🏌♂️ 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Although we like to stay away from sand traps, trees and any body of water on the golf course… these obstacles present us with the instinctive ability to be adaptable. Likewise, decision makers must be aware and stay flexible with new regulations, industry trends, and any changes that may affect their employee population. 🏆 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤: Many think the game of golf is an individual sport, but significant teamwork is required between a foursome in a golf outing or with a pro golfer and his or her caddy. The same holds true for the design, implementation and ongoing support of an organization’s employee benefit program. At MB, teamwork is at the forefront of everything we do and we’d love the opportunity to be a part of yours! Looking forward to a great tournament this weekend filled with excitement, exceptional golf, and maybe even a few lessons along the way! #TheMemorial #Golf #EmployeeBenefits #MB

FAI - The 'Football Accomodation Index' It must be a sure sign of a deeply broken economic system when even upper-flight footballers can't afford to live in the city that their team/employer is located in - must it not? If it's not financially feasible for footballers to stay in the city then what must it be like for catering, hospitality, and health care workers ? Are we destined to live in a nation of sporting 'franchises' like North America rather than teams which embody the identity and culture of their native towns or cities? #distributed #regenerative #wellbeingeconomy #doughnuteconomics 'The commercial success of the city of Inverness – which will always be our home – both as a tourist destination and a place to live, has led to very high prices for the accommodation we require to house players. In addition to these high costs which our competitors do not carry, the extremely limited housing stock in Inverness continues to be both a challenge and a huge factor working against us.' Strategic Consultant (ESG & DEI) | Founder BOXLESS | Founder BARCO | Project Manager 'Black at Sussex' | Co-Founder Men of Melanin | Soho House & Co Inclusivity Board | TEDx Speaker 2024 | Police Crime Commissioner IPM
I've been playing golf in Sussex for the last 7/8 years - I'm very often the only POC on the course and almost always the only POC at any corporate golf event. Some of the 'incidents' I've experienced over that time on reflection have been outright racism (don't call me Tiger Woods please, its boring now). Last week was the first time I have ever played without that narrative (because I arranged it) and it poses a big question. Where’s the Diversity in Golf? Corporate Golf is often seen as a cornerstone of corporate networking, but the lack of diversity is an issue that many are reluctant to address. Whether it's gender, race, or socioeconomic background, golf and particularly corporate golf events, remain strikingly homogenous. To Businesses and Golf Clubs: What Are You Doing About It? In a time where Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are at the forefront of corporate values, it’s astonishing to see such little progress in the world of golf. How can we promote inclusivity in the workplace but exclude it from the very spaces where business relationships are built? Are you actively creating initiatives to diversify participation? Do you have programs to introduce golf to underrepresented communities? Are there mentorship opportunities within your corporate golf events for diverse employees? If not, why not? It’s time for businesses and golf clubs to step up and make meaningful changes. Diversity isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a necessity for growth, innovation and true inclusion. The opportunity to transform the culture of corporate golf and make it a game for everyone is a challenge I'm not seeing anyone in Sussex really grab hold of. #DiversityInGolf #CorporateResponsibility #DEI #InclusiveGolf #GolfForAll John Lynch Kevan Smith Liam Ray DYKE GOLF CLUB LIMITED Mid Sussex Golf Club East Brighton Golf Club Horsham Golf Club Westhovegolf Brighton Golf England Golf Trust The Goodwood Group Mannings Heath Golf LEWES GOLF CLUB LIMITED WEST SUSSEX GOLF CLUB,LIMITED East Sussex National Golf Club HILLBARN GOLF CLUB LIMITED Worthing Golf Club (Links Road Golf Club Ltd) TPG Sports Events

🏅 How being an athlete may help you at work 🏅 Like most folks, I'm obsessed with watching the Olympics this summer. It's so satisfying seeing people who are best at their craft experiencing what might be the highlight of their careers. I was a competitive fencer in high school. I was nowhere near as good as the folks competing in Paris but I was the captain of my high school team and traveled for lots of national competitions. When talking to college hires and early in career folks who don't have a lot of work experience, I like to compare some of the learnings I got from being an athlete on a team to what I've learned at work. ⏱ Putting in the time & work - When you first start training or when you first start in your career, there's nothing more important than just putting in the time and getting experience under your belt. Sometimes that means doing the same thing over and over until it's muscle memory. Sometimes that means competing against a lot of different people to get experience with lots of different situations. Same goes for career - nothing can take the place of time, practice, and experiences. 👯♀️ It's all about the team - Fencing is a funny sport because you compete as an individual but there are team competitions where the total score of the team matters. You have to carry your weight as an individual, but you need to rely on the other folks on your team to win. You learn from, practice with, and compete against your teammates. Same goes at work - you get better because of the folks on your team, you learn from them, rely on them, and yes, there's still that aspect of competition when it comes to promotions, rewards, etc. 🌍 Communities are small - The fencing community in New York City was small. Every competition had the same folks, every training camp I went to had the same group of coaches, and even in national competitions, I'd compete with the same people often. This community ended up helping me get better through competition, practice, and in many cases, became my good friends. Same goes for work - the community I've built has been an awesome resource for mentors, friends, new jobs, advice, learning, etc.

Sydney is facing the worst affordable housing crisis in its history, and it's time for social responsibility to take centre stage. Any selling decision should consider the impact on the Western Sydney punters who have supported the horse racing club for generations, now faced with a lack of affordable housing. Most need somewhere affordable to live, but probably not Ms Waterhouse. These "essential workers" are now forced to seek affordable rental accommodation on the outskirts of Metropolitan Sydney, away from easy access to their jobs. They face many hours of energy-sapping commuting daily to their workplaces, Public Hospitals, Aged care facilities and Teachers with the added stress of significant staff shortages. Let's prioritise the needs of our community and support affordable housing solutions for all. #sydney #essentialworkers #socialresponsibility

Wachusett Mountain Ski Area had lied to the plaintiff about an employee's training, and had altered records to make it appear as though the employee had received required training when they had not. The plaintiff is seeking damages from the ski area for the false information provided regarding the employee's training. The outcome of the lawsuit is unknown at this time. This type of falsification of employee records is a serious matter and can have significant consequences for both the employee and the employer. It is important for ski areas and other recreational businesses to ensure that their employees receive proper training and that accurate records are kept. Failure to do so can result in serious injuries or accidents, as well as legal liability for the business. https://rec-law.us/40ECStm #Lawsuit #Chairlift @RecreationLaw #SkiLaw #SkiAreaLaw #RecLaw #RecreationLaw

Golf is not only an excellent platform for #networking and conducting business, it also reveals a great deal about a person's character and professional ethics. Observe the behavior of your fellow players: do they fudge their scores, offer generous concessions on putts, or employ a subtle 'foot wedge' when they think no one is watching? During your next round, pay attention to how individuals conduct themselves on the course, especially when the stakes are low.
Standout golfers who aren’t quite PGA TOUR material now have somewhere else to play professionally: Corporate America. People who can smash 300-yard drives and sink birdie putts are sought-after hires in #finance, #consulting, #sales and other industries, recruiters say. In the #hybrid work era, the business #golf outing is back in a big way. Executive #recruiter Shawn Cole says he gets so many requests to find ace golfers that he records candidates’ handicaps, an index based on average number of strokes over par, in the information packets he submits to clients. Golf alone can’t get you a plum job, he says—but not playing could cost you one. Tee times and #networking sessions have long gone hand-in-golf-glove. Despite criticism that doing business on the course undermines #diversity, equity and inclusion efforts—and the fact that golf clubs haven’t always been open to women and minorities—people who mix golf and work say the outings are one of the last reprieves from 30-minute calendar blocks. Mental Performance & Wellness Coach | Owner of Peaks Within Reach | Co-Owner Bourbon Fat | Leadership Development & Learning Expert | Golfer
For what it's worth, I'm a 9-12 handicap and dropping. I drive it about 260. Can sink the long birdie putts. And, I'm a human-centered problem solver who can connect and engage during an 18-hole round. I'm also a mental performance (Sports Psychology) coach who can help others improve their game or leadership skills. #hireme #recruiters #consulting #golf
