Should we train climbing gym employees like lifeguards? My first job was lifeguarding, and I loved it, but I took it very seriously. I believed that people's lives were in my hands. I lifeguarded for 13 years, progressing to become an instructor trainer. This meant that I was certified to train individuals as lifeguards. Lifeguards are trained to prevent accidents before they happen. It is no different now that I manage climbing gyms. I train our climbing gym employees like lifeguards. I instruct them to patrol the climbing area, survey it with their eyes, continually looking for improperly tied knots, belay devices that aren't loaded correctly, and stop kids from running under someone who’s bouldering. In short, we train accident prevention to see it before it happens and intervene. Someday I may even consider putting red crosses on our employee T-shirts. At the gym, people's lives are in our hands as we facilitate the practice of rock climbing. Perhaps we should take it as seriously as lifeguards take watching their water. How do you train your staff, do you draw from other professions? #climbing #rockclimbing #climbinggym #climbinglifeguard

How much value does an athlete bring to your professional team? Hiring someone with a sports background comes with pros and cons. What I can tell you is that over the +40 years of intense sports (up to 24 hours per week), I have learned a lot, discovered more of who I am, where my limitations are, and what can be done to push boundaries to come back even better. Tonight I will be running Le Grand Raid in La Reunion Island, la Diagonale des Fous. One of the most difficult race on this format consisting of 100 miles in the mountains with 10’000 meters on positive and negative elevation. To have a chance to succeed in this run I had to work harder than ever on 3 main components : • Preparation • Planning • Resilience The mind will have to do the rest. That’s just my own experience and by no means the absolute truth ! So… curious to hear your thoughts : what are the top 3 transferable criterias you believe sport can bring to your workforce? How much value does an athlete bring to your professional team?

I help swimming coaches build race-winning skills in a systematic manner. Follow for posts about how to develop the most important skills as quickly and easily as possible.
One of the challenges coaches often face is a lack of attention span in swimmers. They just can’t seem to focus. It was something I struggled with for a long time. It was until I realized engagement often reflects the task at hand rather than the individual that I started to overcome this challenge. Instead of asking them to do the same thing over and over again, I started constantly giving them different tasks. And I designed the tasks to provide as much feedback as possible to hold their attention. There was a big change. When I continue with these strategies, focus is much better, and when I don’t, that same focus evaporates. What swimmers are asked to do dramatically impacts the degree of engagement.

VISIT WALES SHOULD NOT BE LISTING OR PROMOTING - 29 of 50 Highlander Reisen offers guided walking holidays that are not accredited with Visit Wales. Highlander Reisen has been reported as falling outside of the Visit Wales onboarding rules as part of my campaign to have Visit Wales deliver a 'level playing field'. HIGHLANDER REISEN REMAIN ON THE VISIT WALES WEBSITE My business, Wales Outdoors, which delivers daily events through Mountain Leader and Green Badge Guide qualified staff, in Wales, to tourists from across the globe, remains banned from the Visit Wales website. Visit Wales staff apply their not fit for purpose onboarding rules to Wales Outdoors but not to Highlander Reisen. Why do Visit Wales staff insist on platforming a business offering guided walks that has no accreditation through the Visit Wales Adventure Activity Assurance Scheme and why do Visit Wales staff refuse to explain this glaring discriminatory practice? This is a question I have been demanding an answer to since March of 2020.
