Does specializing in one sport at a young age increase the incidence of injuries? 1. A group of 159 asymptomatic youth baseball players were physically assessed by physical therapists and then followed for 6.7 +/- 1.5 months. 2. There were 14 pitchers and 7 position players that sustained arm injuries. Of these injuries, 13 were shoulder injuries and 8 were elbow injuries. 3. Arm injuries were more common in athletes that specialized in one sport when compared to non-specialization athletes. Positional specificity was not found to be significant. Of note… Approximately 60% of parents were unaware of their child’s specialization status and the possible threat this presented for their health. This further supports the notion of the importance of continued education for parents, coaches, and players alike. Arnold AJ, Thigpen CA, Beattie PF, Kissenberth MJ, Tokish JM, Shanley E. Real Wisdom from Rob Panariello below:
I've been going through my archives of video footage and re-visiting a lot of the presentations that I recorded when I held professional development events during my younger days. There are lots of great speakers that I was fortunate to capture, and I want to share this information with others. So, please keep your eyes open for more of these presentations as I find the time to edit and upload them. In this case, I had Rob Panariello speak on bridging the gap between Strength & Conditioning and Rehabilitation professionals. This is a great long-form presentations on numerous issues that need to be examined by practitioners on both sides of the spectrum from performance to injury rehabilitation. Rob has had significant experience working both in the private sector and throughout professional sports, most recently in the NFL as a Head Medical and Performance Director. #rehab #rehabilitation #strengthandconditioning #injury #injuries #strength #speed #power #conditioning #health #fitness #ACL #shoulder https://lnkd.in/gQDpRCmY

Para-rowing is a great way to get in shape, stay in shape or just get out on the water for some fun. Rowing is adaptable for many, including amputees, and those with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy and visual impairment to name a few specific disabilities. The equipment is adapted to the user rather than the sport being adapted to the participant. There are four events in para-rowing: men and women's single sculls, mixed double sculls and mixed coxed four, all with three disability categories. https://ow.ly/fVqq50TcGsq

Rehab Runs On-leg rehab runs are back, and these girls didn't let a bit of snow slow them down. Rehab Run facilitator @chelseycollinspt and I ran the group through a structured 60 minute session this morning. At ORKA, each athlete's physiotherapist stratifies them to Level 1,2,3 of a rehab run and Stages 1-5 of on field technical drills when they meet outlined criteria and levels of competency. The 3 Levels are designed with the following 4 pillars at heart: 1. restoring movement quality in linear/multiplanar motions 2. physical conditioning 3. restoring sport specific skills 4. developing chronic training load. As the athletes progress through staging, they'll encounter sport specific movements, skills and eventually, practice simulation and a progressive return to team practice and competitive matchplay. There is a large gap between the treatment table and field of play, and it's up to the rehab and performance teams to work with coaches on how best to improve both technical and tactical aspects of the athletes performance to ensure psychological readiness before they are expected to perform. #ORKA #RehabRuns
