STORY📰 Our Defence Force is ensuring more personnel are trained to bring a gender perspective to military operations and deployments through the implementation of the United Nations Security Council resolution on Women, Peace and Security. In an emergency, there are the needs people immediately think of such as medical help, food and water, but period and baby products are also essential. Director Women, Peace and Security Lieutenant Colonel Laura Cranston said the NZDF had made a consistent effort to grow the number of personnel trained as Gender Focal Points who advocate for an all-inclusive lens to be implemented across the Defence Force when deployed on operations and disaster responses. More than 200 personnel have been trained already as gender focal points, with that number set to grow. “Correct planning for operations and how we respond to emergencies is critical. Through gender analysis training, we are providing personnel with tools to incorporate when they plan deployments, prevent or resolve conflicts, or respond in emergency situations.” ~ Lieutenant Colonel Cranston Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gNVD_gtY #Force4NZ

JUST RELEASED: New issue brief “Improving Peacekeeping Early Warning and Rapid Response at the Field Level” on two examples of bottom-up, innovative practices in United Nations Peacekeeping field offices in the #CentralAfricanRepublic and the #DemocraticRepublicOfTheCongo. This brief explains some of the challenges to peacekeeping missions’ field presences in receiving early warnings of violence against civilians. It looks at what systems already exist and where some of the gaps are. In reaction to those challenges, two field offices—one in MINUSCA and one in MONUSCO—developed new ways of integrating the information they receive on threats to civilians from their military, police, and civilian components. What are some common features and differences between these mechanisms? How have they improved early warning and coordination, and what outstanding challenges exist? CIVIC’s research offers a snapshot of innovation and integration by peacekeepers in the field, suggesting initial lessons for other peacekeeping missions. 🟢 | EXPERT ANALYSIS: Our #ConstitutionalReformsGuide features new content: “Reform of Mexico’s National Guard: Towards Total Militarization” by Jonathan De Vicente Encarnación! “According to the National Inventory of Militarization, from 2006 to 2022, there have been at least 291 transfers of civilian functions and budgets to the armed forces, which shows that militarization is indisputable. Nevertheless, this reform completely changes civil-military relations, giving more power to military corporations and subordinating democratically elected authorities. The Secretaries of Defense (SEDENA) and the Navy (SEMAR) will have the third highest budget of the entire federal public administration, which will be increased because they will have 30 companies with majority state participation under their control.” 🇲🇽 🪖 👉 https://lnkd.in/gmdhByFM #ConstitutionalReforms #NationalGuard #Militarization #PublicSecurity #USMX #SecurityCooperation México Unido Contra la Delincuencia

Providing open-source investigations and expert analysis on Russia. Specialising in sub-state security issues: terrorism, PMCs & state-linked security actors.
Politico cite anonymous US sources that claim Wagner has now divided into four different groups: one aligned with the National Guard, two under the control of the Defence Ministry, and African Corps. The article claims the US officials were "granted anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence matters." Yet there is nothing new or not publicly available in the article -- it's just another example of anonymity being granted excessively. It makes the story seem more novel or exciting than it actually is. The framing of the article is also inherently misleading, since African Corps is under the control of the Defence Ministry. I've profiled the group previously -- see the link in the comments. The claim that "the reconstituted paramilitary groups have already forced the Biden administration to withdraw troops from Niger and Chad" is similarly deceptive: it's only true in so far as the regimes in certain countries see Russia as providing a security alternative that allows them to turn away from the West; it is not the result of direct confrontation. #Russia #Wagner #PMCs

A recommended read for anyone working in #DefencePolicy, even more so for US allies and partners The book takes a reflective and unflinching view of US defence policy history in how the nation prepares for and goes to war outlining the strengths and weaknesses inherent in US defence matters For non-US defence practitioners, the book serves to deepen the appreciation of how, and why, US defence policy decisions, procurement, and defence research function providing opportunity to compare and contrast other national approaches to defence politics While there are many take ways, a key one is recognizing that while emulating some aspects of the US defence system is most assuredly important, given their unique approach to defence politics, large aspects of US defence matters are incompatible with those of other nations - an important reminder when modeling their approach to defence #nationalsecurity #military #defenceprocurement #defenceinnovation

Today, in partnership with the Women's Major Group , we call on governments to fulfill their #SDG16 obligations. By the end of 2020, state-based armed conflicts had reached their highest levels since 1945, with nearly two billion people living in conflict zones. In 2021 alone, a record of 89 million people were displaced, coinciding with global military expenditure exceeding $2 trillion for the first time. It is imperative to recalibrate these priorities, emphasising investments in sustainable peace over militarisation. #HLPF2024 #SDG16Now

ICYMI **In response to escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, the U.S. is sending additional troops to the Middle East, according to Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.** While specifics on troop numbers and tasks were withheld for operational security, Ryder emphasized that the move is part of a broader strategy to bolster regional forces amid rising tensions. The USS Harry S. Truman, accompanied by two Navy destroyers and a cruiser, departed for the Sixth Fleet in Europe. This deployment allows for overlapping carrier strike groups in the region to address any further escalation. In parallel, the State Department has urged U.S. citizens to leave Lebanon due to the increasing threat of a wider regional conflict. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has engaged in diplomatic efforts with Israeli officials, pressing for a ceasefire and reduction of hostilities. The situation remains fluid, with the U.S. forces positioned strategically across the region, ready to respond as necessary. #thenewswhisperer #NewsUpdate #news #newsfeed #Israel #Hezbollah #Lebanon #UnitedStates #troops #MiddleEast #Pentagon #MajGenPatRyder

Today, Policy Exchange hosted Rt Hon John Healey, Shadow Secretary of State for Defence, for a keynote speech in which he made some important announcements of defence policy if a Labour government is elected. Noting that we are moving from a post-war to pre-war scenario, he began by acknowledging the need for change to deal with threats to the UK and for better strategic preparation. Among the announcements were the establishment of a Military Strategic Head Quarters and the extension from 2 to 4 years for the office of Service Chiefs. There was also recognition of the need to mend the 'broken' procurement system and to better support those serving in the Armed Forces. You can hear the full detail of the speech here: https://lnkd.in/e35cN9t9 #UKLabourParty #defencepolicy #defenceindustrialstrategy
