Post 1/2 - EU-Central Asia Young Leaders' Conference Reflections from the two-day «EU-Central Asia Young Leaders' Conference: Shifting the Paradigm for Sustainable Water Action» organized by and co-hosted by #theEuropeanUnionSpecialRepresentativeOfficeForCentralAsia and Nordic International University on 30-31 October 2024. It brought together around 100 participants under the age of 35 from #CentralAsia, representing youth-led initiatives, civil society organizations, researchers, media, young politicians as well as the governments. 🔍 Key Highlights: - Being a moderator at high-level panel: It was a unique experience for me to moderate the “Water Sofa” Workshop with distinguished panelists [experts] including the European Union Special Representative for Central Asia - her H.E. Terhi Hakala, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation at TIIAME National Research University - Prof. Абдулхаким Салохиддинов, Head of Cooperation, EU Delegation to Kazakhstan, Team Europe Initiative on Water, Energy and Climate Change in Central Asia - Dr. Johannes Baur, and a distinguished Water Engineer at SUEZ (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) -Ms. Geraldine Regnier. We dove into topics like water-saving practices, the roles of governments and industries, and the importance of international cooperation in addressing water scarcity. - Field Insights: One of the most inspiring experiences was our visit to the experimental field at Suvchilar Maktabi, led by the TIIAME National Research University. Seeing theoretical concepts come to life in sustainable agricultural practices was a powerful reminder of how local knowledge can drive global solutions. Ps. Water Sofa workshop is a unique and informal interview setup with formal people, traditionally hosted by the SIWI - Stockholm International Water Institute during World Water Week. It creates an engaging and relaxed atmosphere where speakers can discuss critical issues while directly interacting with the audience.

What specific funding challenges are hindering #innovation and #research efforts in the Mediterranean Region, and how can stakeholders leverage synergies and opportunities to address these challenges effectively? Yesterday, the Union for the Mediterranean R&I funders' meeting convened in Brussels, with a particular focus on addressing the pressing challenges and opportunities in innovation and research across the Mediterranean Region. Throughout the event, PRIMA played a role in highlighting the funding gaps, synergies and opportunities present in the innovation and research landscape of the Mediterranean region. PRIMA's chair Prof. Angelo Riccaboni, presented the results achieved by PRIMA and the role of scientific research in promoting a prosperous and sustainable Mediterranean. The ongoing conversation on the future of PRIMA will be related to the commitment of multiple EuroMED institutions for the implementation of the roadmaps identified by the Union for the Mediterranean for research and innovation activities. Antonella Autino then co-moderated two sessions with @Hamid El Zoheiry focusing on the barriers, gaps, and opportunities when it comes to funding for innovation and research, and funding for capacity building and circulation of knowledge. Context: 🌍 In 2021, UfM adopted roadmaps for R&I in priority areas like Health, Renewable Energies, and Climate Change. 📜 Endorsed by the 2022 Ministerial Conference, the roadmaps aim to align with UN SDGs and the 2030 Agenda. 🔑 Implementation is crucial for effective development, requiring mobilization of resources and alignment of policies. This roundtable is coupled with a second significant event: the Soft Launch of the Euro-Mediterranean Hub for R&I, scheduled today, with a special message from the co-chair Mohamed El-Shinawi and Angelo Riccaboni. Stay tuned for more updates.
