Hatfield’s Cassidee Hall, Manager of Infrastructure and Environmental Management in our Terrace office, is pleased to attend this year’s Wildfire Resiliency and Training Summit hosted by FireSmart BC from April 20-24, 2024. The summit will be held at the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre on the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, part of the Dakelh (Carrier) peoples’ territory. This year the theme is Recover, Rebuild, Prepare: Exercising resilience after experiencing unprecedented wildfires, rebuilding communities with FireSmart principles in mind, and preparing for future wildfire activity. Hatfield has a long history supporting wildfire management in Western Canada, and our remote sensing based arboSense Fuels product aims to support the strengthening of the FireSmart program through high resolution mapping of forest fuels across the wildland urban interface using lidar technology and derived data. As British Columbia aims to regain strength from its most severe wildfire season on record in 2023, this event will play a significant part in reinforcing BC's FireSmart program, while educating communities throughout the province how to be more resilient in the face of this year’s upcoming wildfire season. Among various keynote sessions, expert panels, workshops, and training programs, there will also be ample opportunities for networking and to celebrate existing partnerships at this incredible event. Zero Tolerance for Fires: There should be absolutely no fires under any circumstances. This is a strict policy that we all must adhere to for our safety. Tie up your pets. All pets must be leashed so that the administration can go door to door with updated information if necessary. Be FireSmart. Follow these practices to help prevent the spread of Fire (View more here.) - Clean under your deck to remove any combustible material. - Clean and maintain gutters and roofs. - Keep decks clear of leaves and debris. - Keep grass and weeds cut below 10 centimetres. - Move firewood and lumber 10-30 metres away from the home. - Relocate propane tanks 10-30 metres away from the home, and remove ALL Jerry cans. Filmed in Oregon and narrated by David Oyelowo, ELEMENTAL: REIMAGINE WILDFIRE (84 min) takes viewers on a journey across the nation with the top experts to better understand fire. The film starts with the harrowing escape from Paradise, California, as the town ignited from wind-driven embers and burned within a few hours of the fire's start and then continues to recent record-shattering fires. The film includes the voices of climate experts, Indigenous people, and fire survivors and asks us to reimagine wildfire as we prepare for an increasingly hotter future. "Elemental is an outstanding film that deserves the widest possible viewing. In a visually stunning manner, it distills what we’ve learned about wildfire over the decades and provides a road-map for badly needed changes that will benefit thousands of people, particularly in fire prone communities.” - United States Forest Service Chief Michael Dombeck (Ret.) In the wake of deadly fires in Oregon, California, Colorado and New Mexico, ELEMENTAL, REIMAGINE WILDFIRE is an important look at discovering how we can all reimagine our relationship with wildfire, now more timely and urgent than ever. “Elemental does an excellent job of explaining our current wildfire problems and the solutions most likely to help us protect our homes, communities, and public lands moving forward. Built on a solid foundation of science and fact, the film explores our options in an era of extended drought and increasing wildfire size and intensity.” - Tom Boatner, Bureau of Land Management, Chief of Fire Operations (Ret.), smokejumper Trip Jennings founded Balance Media and has worked with National Geographic for over a decade. He is the producer of the PBS Digital Series Weathered. His films have won dozens of awards around the world and have aired on major networks on every continent. For nearly two decades, Ralph Bloemers has worked on wildfire and community safety, restored burned trails, and forest protection.
