The Albion Foundation’s HATCH Project in coordination with KFC and UK Youth gives young adults across the region an opportunity to break into the world of employment. Leah and Ollie, two HATCH candidates have now achieved part-time contracts at KFC’s Quinton and Halesowen branches, respectively. Connexions Sandwell careers adviser Maxine Davis supported Ollie and referred him to the Hatch project. Ollie said “I was looking for a way to get a job or get some education. I’d been kicked out of college, I didn’t do well at school, I didn’t have any GCSEs. I’d tried going for different job interviews and nobody would hire me.” Well done Ollie 👏 Sandwell Council Mark B. Work for a company that allows time away because they know you’ll be better for them in the long run. Innovation and longevity is not a grind. Work for a company who sees you, not only as an employee, an asset, or a resource. A company that understands that life goes on outside of the 4 walls. Work for a company who values family. Who knows you are irreplaceable at home in times of need. Work for a company who trusts you and provides flexibility. Trusts that you are going to give your all most days, and make up for the times when you can’t. On days where I have no child care, I’m thankful I can keep an eye on my kids from the comfort of my dining room table. Even if this means putting in the late hours to ensure I’m showing up for my family, my team, and my employer. I’m a better employee when I can care for my family during these irregular times. Summer camp will begin and my schedule will go back to normal. But for now, I’ll simply relish in gratitude.

My first job in Canada? McDonald's crew. Because somebody took a chance on me. I couldn't get a job back then. Not at the dry cleaners. Not at the dollar store. My dad waited outside a grocery store, talking to strangers who would care to pause and give us a glance, saying that we were new immigrants and that any help would be a great help. Until someone decided to give a contact info for a McDonald's branch that was hiring. I went, got interviewed, got hired. I worked very hard at this job - didn't take anything for granted - so I could show my gratitude for the chance. --- My first formal teaching job? Teaching kids at a summer camp. Because somebody took a chance on me. I barely graduated from my program. I needed a job. I thought I could teach, but with no real experience (at that time) to back me up. I knew they were looking for summer camp instructors. I didn't think there were many applicants back then because the contract required a lot of work developing the program from the ground up. But I needed and wanted the job. I showed up for the interview and got hired. 22 years later, I am still teaching for the department. --- All through my career, there have been these amazing people who've taken chances on me. That’s taught me something big - how important it is to be that person who gives others their first break. What about you? Has someone ever taken a chance on you? Or maybe you're the one giving someone else their break right now? Every big journey starts with a simple, sometimes scary, first step. A helping hand may have ripple effects far more reaching than we could ever imagine.

Reflecting on my first M&S Christmas on the grad scheme 🎄✨ This Christmas was an unforgettable part of my M&S Graduate Programme journey. Taking on key responsibilities during the busiest time of the year challenged me to step up, adapt, and grow as a leader. Managing the Christmas Gift Shop 🎁: Leading the Gift Shop was both rewarding and challenging. I managed my own team, receiving positive feedback on how I supported them through the busy period. I also learned to plan shop floor moves and condense stock as lines sold through, ensuring the space stayed appealing and easy to shop. Christmas Food to Order Operation 🍗🎅: Leading the overnight operation was intense yet rewarding. With the support of experienced colleagues, we worked together to prepare all orders for the following day. It was a real team effort that taught me the value of collaboration and trust. This period wasn’t just professionally challenging—it brought personal struggles too. Balancing the intensity of the season with the demands of a leadership role tested me in ways I hadn’t experienced before, and that’s absolutely fine! These struggles taught me the importance of self-awareness and prioritizing my well-being. Christmas at M&S pushed me out of my comfort zone in every way, and I’m proud of the lessons I’ve learned—both from the highs and the challenges. It was supposed to be beer money. But working at Tesco shaped so much of my career. I was just out of art college with a shiny certificate and a lovingly prepared portfolio to my name. The greatest 3 years of my life all wrapped up in a leather zip-up case. People weren’t exactly throwing pound notes at my feet as a fresh-faced student with no work experience so I did what all degree-level students do with their hard-earned qualifications… Get a job in the supermarket. With no intention of sticking around longer than I had to, but with an inherent belief that if you’re doing something you may as well do it well… I got to stacking those tatties. It was tiring, laborious work that certainly allowed me to tell people I was now working out but despite the dull nature of the daily tasks, it taught me something all young people should really benefit from. How. To. Graft. The money was rubbish. The hours were rubbish. The customers were…. Throughout my career, I’ve often looked back on my time in the fruit & veg aisles and credited it with my continued resilience and work ethic. Did I want to work with the general public in supermarket mode forever? No. I won’t even dress that up. Did that experience teach me more than all my years in education about how to succeed in business? You bet it did. How did your early experiences shape your career?
