Building off the success of #NationalApprenticeshipWeek, this past week has been the 1st ever #YouthApprenticeshipWeek (YAW), which is a nationwide celebration that highlights the benefits and value of Registered Apprenticeship program opportunities for youth, ages 16–24. Employers, educators, labor unions, workforce professionals, and their partners across the country are launching Registered Apprenticeship programs that allow youth to earn competitive wages while obtaining the relevant training and experience to start their careers, often including the opportunity to earn college credit. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the number of active youth apprentices increased by 118% over the last 10 years, from 119,996 to 262,221. It also says that 94% of apprentices who complete a Registered Apprenticeship retain employment – with an average annual salary of $80,000. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/evRRmHhm

As we wrap up #NAW2024, we’re proud to celebrate the growth of the apprenticeship movement in Indiana. In a recent report from Apprenticeships for America on how states are driving the expansion of apprenticeships, Indiana was listed as a top five state for proportion of apprentices in the labor force in 2024. We’re excited to continue progressing the apprenticeship movement and connecting workers with education and training opportunities that prepare them for in-demand careers. https://lnkd.in/ejBQCK5A

Community colleges play a crucial role in traditional apprenticeship programs, often providing the classroom-based components. Additionally, many community colleges actively collaborate with employers, including those who are nonunion or choose not to operate under Department of Labor regulations, to develop independent workplace learning programs such as internships, cooperative education, and various forms of employee training. These colleges offer apprenticeship models that operate outside the traditional collective bargaining framework and are not linked to union-management relations. Moreover, community colleges are interested in expanding apprenticeship programs to include emerging fields like information technology and industry services. As they explore ways to broaden their workforce programs, including apprenticeship training, the aim is to modernize the apprenticeship system by combining the benefits of work-based learning with the awarding of educational credentials, such as associate degrees. Community colleges are well-positioned to support these efforts. (Just one like )

According to the Women in the Michigan Workforce report, in 2023, there were just 600 women in construction and just under 400 women in manufacturing registered apprenticeships. This made-up 5.1% and 10.2% of total active registered apprentices in these industries. Women in Skilled Trades (WIST) is an organization that increases the number of women in construction skilled trades by administering the Apprenticeship Readiness Program (ARP). In this 16-week program, apprentices learn the fundaments and basic skills through a combination of classroom and hands-on activities. Graduates of a WIST ARP are guaranteed an interview with one of our sponsoring Building Trades Unions, to join their Apprenticeship Program, where they can continue their on-the-job training while getting paid. About the Webinar There is a lot of momentum around Registered Apprenticeships in the public sector, but it isn’t always clear how they work and whether they are a viable long-term solution for local governments. In this webinar, attendees will learn how non-traditional registered apprenticeships can help local governments hire for positions that are in high demand and notoriously difficult to fill. The presentation will provide an overview of what a non-traditional apprenticeship is, how it works, and how this earn-and-learn model can help local government employers build a skilled and diverse workforce pipeline. Attendees will hear directly from local governments that are already successfully implementing these programs and get a first look at ILG’s new exclusive pilot program for cities, counties, and special districts to test out registered apprenticeships in hard-to-fill roles. Speakers Channing Hawkins, Board President, West Valley Water District Nicole Pacada, Division of Apprenticeship Standards, Department of Industrial Relations Lucas Frerichs, County Supervisor, Yolo County Moderated by Erica Manuel, CEO and Executive Director, Institute for Local Government.

The Prime Minister recently announced a major overhaul of the apprenticeship system in England, introducing a new growth and skills levy that will replace the existing levy. Key changes include funding for shorter, flexible apprenticeships and a focus on foundational apprenticeships to meet critical industry demands, making it easier for young people to gain essential skills. As more updates emerge from Skills England and the Department for Education, we’ll be available to help clients fully understand and leverage these opportunities.
