HAPPY 4TH OF JULY PEOPLE.... On this day we celebrate. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness...we celebrate our Freedoms on Independence Day!! Today, I am somewhere in Alaska. Checking out the beauty of this country in a State I've never visited before. I can move around without fear or worry and freely. Enjoying all the things this country brings us as citizens. Freedom folks... I also celebrate a different kind of Freedom. Financial and freedom of time. I left my corporate job over 2 years ago. I have no income that is dependent on a company paying me! Or at least not one that I don't have direct impact and control over. My time, my path and my life is now completely my own! I am free to make what I want, enjoy whatever time I choose and have experiences with my family on a regular basis! It's an amazing thing really. Being able to work when I want, live where I want and travel wherever I want while providing my family with experiences that will create a lifetime of memories. Folks...let's celebrate Freedom today. Whatever that means to you. Whatever you want that to be for you. It's out there...go get it and enjoy!! After retiring it took me quite a while to learn that I could “disconnect”; I spent my first few weeks of retirement expecting the “usual” daily deluge of emails and emergencies that had somehow become my normal. I miss my former colleagues, but I don’t miss how much pressure I had been under, having responsibility for projects, procurements, staff, security, and more. Finally, I am starting to treat my new author-life as a job; creating a researching & writing routine to ensure the day isn’t frittered away with walks along the beach and coffee breaks. Do you have an alternate life-goal? Perhaps you keep putting it off until you have more time, or until the current busy period settles down? That’s what I did, so I can relate. If I have one thought to leave with you, it is this: If you are successful at work, you can be successful at your passion-project. Don’t leave it too late to follow your dream.

Here in Australia it’s #ANZAC day, when we gather by stone monuments that can’t forget, to honour what we can’t remember, because it didn’t happen to us at #Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, when young men died in a group madness called war that we just can’t seem to cure this species of. Only #epigenetics now tells us it did happen to us, in a way. It’s a kind of molecular memory that helps explain the spread through humanity’s family forest, of global traumas like #WWI and #WWII. Of course, cause and effect is complex here - world wars cause huge #trauma but are themselves the result of prior traumas of groups of humans acting from painful memory, to serve what they think are their best interests. Last century, when I was born, saw the most awful slaughter, but also penicillin, our best efforts yet at social justice and democracy, and communication like never before. Sadly one of the best developments of the 20th century gets left off the list too often. The #unconscious wasn’t invented of course, but last century it got its first real chance to be known by us. Spurred on by war’s effects on returned soldiers, we began to name our trauma and the scales, tiny and massive, at which it goes on. The unconscious simply means the automated processes of our nervous systems. We evolved in groups long before technology, culture, morals and laws, and we affect one another automatically in ways - regardless of right or wrong - that ensure enough of us survive…so there’s still a group. This unspoken and so often unseen life inside us is so rich: no one is truly boring. But of course we get bored anyway. We stare at our phones, we comfort eat, we take drugs, we procrastinate, we permit and perpetuate casual prejudice, we take sides in conflicts we don’t care to study, we ignore others beyond our borders. …beyond a bored us, maybe. Some of us will gather at services for the fallen (and other euphemisms for wasted young lives) but many won’t. And tomorrow it’ll be back to business. Except for those who took a sneaky long weekend. This public holiday stands to lose its meaning with mounting degrees of separation from the dead of the War To End All Wars. And as in 2024 we pass LEST WE FORGET written in stone on our way to work, coffee and carbs in hand, reading on our phones if we care to, of all the senseless slaughter that no monument or once-urgent hewn slogan seems able to stop. The thing is, in a way the slaughter, then and now, is not senseless. Everything is caused. Or else we call it magic. There are no magic solutions anymore than there are magic problems. They all came from somewhere, many born with us inconceivably complex creatures. Those of us trained and training in psychodynamics, neuroscience and observational developmental psychology have I think an opportunity or even a duty to speak for the unspoken life within us. We are all experts by birth, fluent in the unspoken. But then…we forget. #psychiatrying #lestweforget
