We’re halfway through CommUnity Week, our annual global event that celebrates the unity of our #OneNewell team and highlights our commitment to our communities. This year’s theme, Creativity & Innovation, is supported by events aiming to unlock the power of creativity and strengthen our community and those in which we operate. On Monday, employees were invited to participate in a centering “Creativity through Mindfulness” yoga and meditation session. On Tuesday, our Consumer & Shopper Insights team hosted a discussion about cultivating curiosity and developing habits that nurture creativity. Teams around the world also celebrated with local activations like decorating ceramics with Sharpie® creative markers in Spain, spending time with therapy dogs in Atlanta, GA, volunteering at a food bank near our Bristol, U.K. location, and more. Stay tuned as we continue to celebrate CommUnity Week!

Now in it's 7th year, Global Community Engagement Day is celebrated in over 40 countries around the world. It's aim is to recognise and promote the importance of community and public participation around the world. Yesterday Andrew Coulson announced that the theme for Global Community Engagement Day 2024 will be "Looking after our mental health in community engagement." The announcement received a high level of interest and excitement - which instantly assured Andrew and I that we were bang on with our topic selection! We have successfully read the room! During the discussion on Andrews post, the word "Disconnected" really struck me as very powerful - and so it became our 2024 hook! No corporate workshops to brainstorm ideas here - it's always been a case of simply 'going where the energy is' and enjoying the ride! And so now, over to you... Wherever you are in the world, and whatever your interest is in community engagement, you are invited to share your thoughts about this topic - from whatever perspective you choose, using whatever medium you prefer. We are really looking forward to your involvement. And a happy birthday ahead of time to our wonderful friend and colleague Dr Wendy Sarkissian, who's birthday was chosen to mark this global day in acknowledgement of her decades and decades of commitment, energy and wisdom in our sector. We love you, Wendy! I know you're going to LOVE this theme! #globalcommunityengagementday #commengageday #communityengagement

In a world where digital interactions dominate, meaningful community connections are vital. Even pre-pandemic, we yearned for a sense of belonging. The past few years underscored our human need to connect. As an extrovert who loves community building, I've enjoyed organizing neighborhood events that bring people together. Seeing neighbors of all ages connecting fills my soul with warmth. It's clear that happiness is tied to community. Face-to-Face Interactions There's unmatched power in face-to-face interactions. In-person gatherings allow us to read emotions, share experiences, and create lasting memories. Reflecting on the past year, the joy on people's faces as they reunited in person was priceless. Real-life experiences are irreplaceable. Cultural Exchange Modern neighborhoods are vibrant mosaics of cultures. Embracing this diversity enriches us all. In my diverse neighborhood, we've celebrated various holidays and traditions, fostering inclusion. Watching neighbors from different backgrounds come together is truly rewarding. Safety and Unity Safety and unity are intertwined. In a close-knit community, we naturally look out for one another. I'll never forget when my greyhound escaped, and two neighbors recognized my dog and contacted me. Their quick actions ensured our beloved pet was safe. Knowing our neighbors helps us protect and support each other. Mental Well-being Loneliness and isolation are major challenges. Organizing book clubs, park markets, parades, and ice cream socials provides regular social interaction opportunities. Feeling part of a community is vital for mental health. I'll always cherish the moment a young girl at one of our events said, "We should name this park Celebration Park because this is where we have all our celebrations!" This little girl felt a deep sense of belonging and joy, a testament to the power of community. Fostering meaningful community connections enhances our lives. Let's continue building these connections, creating inclusive, safe, and joyful environments for all. Share your thoughts—let's celebrate the power of community together! #CommunityBuilding #FaceToFace #CulturalExchange #Safety #MentalWellBeing

👐 Small hands making big differences. 👥 Community action, shared pride. 🌐 Hoping for wider unity. I want to highlight the power of community involvement through a personal story that's close to my heart. Earlier this year, my son and I joined a local litter picking initiative. As we walked around our local roads and nearby playground, picking up litter, I saw a spark of understanding light up in my son's eyes. He was learning the importance of taking care of our environment and the community we live in. 🏘 But the impact went beyond just cleaning up; it was about fostering a sense of pride and belonging. In our professional lives, this translates to the idea that when we take collective action, even in small ways, we build a stronger, more connected community. Whether it's in the places we live or our workplaces, building ideas of community and shared responsibility often leads to significant positive changes. ❓ Do you engage with your local shared spaces - what small actions have you taken that led to bigger changes in your community or workplace? #community #communityimpact #wellbeing

Here's a global panel discussion you mustn't miss! 28 January is Global #CommunityEngagement Day. This year, it will be on a Sunday. And, due to the different time zones, this panel discussion will be live towards the end of #GlobalCommunityEngagementDay for some, at the very beginning for others, and 'the night before' for me...it will inspire many to participate if their Day is still to come! I started working in 'community engagement' before I even knew what it was. In my work, I just instinctively started involving people & communities in solving problems, tackling complex issues, and in key decisions that were important to them & affected their lives... ...because it seemed to 'work' in getting results...lasting solutions...sustainable success! And it was fun! These days, I understand more of the science & art of community engagement - sometimes called other things over the years, like 'Citizen Involvement' (note emphasis on the individual not the community) and 'Civic Engagement' (note emphasis on the institutional term 'Civic') and '#StakeholderEngagement' (corporate!) - and what is also now increasingly referred to as 'deliberative & participative democracy'. When Becky Hirst FRSA & Andrew Coulson from the wonderful, mutually supportive, peer network Engage2Act (I still live their mantra "go where the energy is"!) said they were launching Global Community Engagement Day several years ago, I enthusiastically embraced it... ...in a good, healthy way, and also in that Obsessive Compulsive way those who know me know I tend to 'enthusiastically embrace' things! My relentless promotion of the launch, and my pretty intense involvement on the Day - going around my part of Sydney taking photos of every community gathering I could see, and Tweeting about Global Community Engagement Day, prompted Andrew & Becky to start Tweeting #BeLikePaul - which was hilarious! Global Community Engagement Day has widened & deepened year-on-year, extending to more countries, and this global panel - also including Emma Broomfield in Australia & Dr Wendy Sarkissian in Canada - is another great evolution. I'm especially pleased this year because the theme is one very dear to my own heart (& mind & soul!) - #MentalHealth, including the #MentalWellbeing, #PsychologicalWellbeing & #PsychologicalSafety of those working in Community Engagement, which can be 'a tough gig', including sometimes working alone but with great peer networks to support. I will bring to the panel my personal & professional experience - as someone living with mental illness for 20 years; as a coach & counsellor who's worked in mental health - and #SuicidePrevention - for many years; and as a consultant & facilitator who's worked in #ParticipatoryResearch & community engagement for 40 years - 2024 is my 40th Anniversary!
