Let’s talk about co-location. In my very first leadership job at GE, I was gifted a fetching high-vis vest in a secret santa by my peers. The joke was that I spent so much time sitting out on the production line rather than at my desk, that I must be doing it for brownie points and better make sure everyone noticed! The real reason I sat out there with my team for hours every day wasn’t to be seen to be present - as important as that is. It also wasn’t to keep an eye on them. It was to listen. The amount of learning I got from overhearing the small, niggling issues my team faced day-to-day far surpassed anything I could get with a session of intentional shadowing. These were the 1 minute inefficiencies - the nitty gritty problems that don’t feel worth escalating in the moment, or get blurred into the daily grind by the time you have a moment to reflect. By sitting and listening to my team dealing with these issues, I felt their pain. And that is the simple power of colocating teams. Struggling with engineers out of sync with front line ops?
