We're over halfway to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 4, yet 300 million students globally will lack basic numeracy and literacy skills unless something changes. In Pakistan, the recent Targeted Instruction Program (TIP) demonstrates promising advances in resolving this crisis. Implemented by the Centre for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP) and evaluated by the Learning and Educational Achievement in Pakistan Schools (LEAPS) team, TIP tailors content to children's learning levels using innovative tools. The study was a randomized control trial conducted in public schools in the Islamabad Capital Territory from 2022-2023, impacting over 91,000 primary school students and 2,200 teachers..✏️ Key Findings: 🌐 Improved Learning Outcomes - Students in treatment groups scored higher than the control group. Their learning gains equate to roughly two months of additional learning. 🌐 Similar Results Across Treatment Groups - All treatment groups showed similar improvements, indicating that the simplest, most cost effective version of TI is just as effective as more elaborate, costly forms. 🌐 Beneficial for Students Behind in Learning - Students in lower performance brackets showed more significant gains compared to higher performers. 🌐 Teacher Effort and Beliefs Matter - Teachers' effort levels and beliefs about control over student performance influenced outcomes. By focusing on targeted instruction and leveraging low-cost technology, the TIP program in Pakistan exemplifies a promising approach to addressing global learning challenges, especially for students lagging behind. Ratna Viswanathan, the CEO of Reach to Teach talks to PTI on how the role of teachers is critical for children to learn. At Reach to Teach, the focus is on engaging with teachers as key players and their engagement paves the way for children's learning, whether it be Foundational Literacy and Numeracy or 21st century skills. Discussing the need to strengthen teacher agency to strengthen learning outcomes, Ratna mentions that, "A subject is only as good as the teacher teaching it. The responsibility of children’s learning vests with teachers. There is a need for teachers to feel engaged and own the way children learn". The NEP 2020 envisages 50 hours of training for teachers and head teachers in a year and this training needs to flow out of children's learning needs. #MakingLearningJoyful #ReachtoTeach #TeacherAgency #NEP2020 https://lnkd.in/gEzuvHJJ

Esoma Solutions Launches Gamified E-Learning Platform for Kenyan Students Esoma Solutions has introduced Esoma Kids, a gamified e-learning platform designed to enhance li.teracy and numeracy skills for K-12 students. The subscription-based service aims to address critical educational challenges in the country through interactive digital learning tools. Founded in 2018 by Julius Irungu, Kelvin Kung'u, and Esborn Waithuki, Esoma Solutions initially launched Esoma-KE, an exam preparation service for K-12 students. Building on this foundation, the company developed Esoma Kids to target children aged 4-10, focusing on improving foundational skills through engaging games and challenges. The platform addresses a pressing need in Kenya's education system, where 60% of fourth-graders struggle with grade three-level math and reading comprehension. This issue extends beyond Kenya, with 89% of children in Sub-Saharan Africa unable to read and comprehend text by age 10. Esoma Solutions has shown significant growth, with its exam prep tool reaching 600,000 users in 2023. The company has secured $112,555 in equity-free funding, including a grant from the Mastercard Foundation. Currently focused on the Kenyan market, Esoma Solutions plans to expand into neighboring regions to broaden its impact on education across Africa. #EdTech #KenyanEducation #DigitalLearning #GamifiedEducation #AfricanStartups
