AB 2432 has reached Governor Newsom's desk! This bill creates a critically needed permanent funding stream so victim services organizations have resources to help Californians in crisis. This funding would be established in the years ahead by holding corporations criminally accountable for harms committed against Californians. Supporting Human Trafficking Victims: The Role of the Reclaim Program On July 30, World Day Against Trafficking in Persons puts a global spotlight on human trafficking. This issue affects people across Canada every day. While we are beginning to recognize the disturbing prevalence of human trafficking in Canada, many are unaware of the aftermath for those in recovery, including financial exploitation and an average debt of $20,000. I am very grateful that Kaitlin Bick and Carly Kalish from Victim Services Toronto had the opportunity to speak on CTV Vancouver about the Reclaim Program. This program is essential in addressing the financial recovery of trafficking victims. If you or someone you know has incurred fraudulent or coercive debt due to trafficking, please reach out for help! Supporting human trafficking victims means supporting the most vulnerable Canadians, including children, those with poor attachment security, low social support, and mental health issues, adding to their already challenging circumstances. Human trafficking victims need help in many ways, including emotional support, legal assistance, safe housing, medical care, and financial recovery. Imagine being a victim of sex trafficking, finding the strength to escape, and then discovering debt incurred in your name. Fraudulent or coercive debt is one of the biggest barriers to recovery for victims of human trafficking. Without assistance and debt elimination, survivors are at risk of being trafficked again. Fraudulent or coercive debt occurs when traffickers steal victims’ identities or force them to open credit cards to support their exploitation. This debt burdens survivors long after they’ve escaped, preventing them from getting credit, jobs, or safe housing, and drastically impeding their recovery. Follow Kaitlin Bick to learn more; she is a rare example of someone with both personal and professional experience in this area. #Humantrafficing #ReclaimProgram

UN Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children (2020-2026). Established Professor of Human Rights Law and Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, University of Galway, MRIA.
On #WorldDayAgainstTrafficking, I am highlighting the obligation to ensure that victims of trafficking are not punished, and are identified, assisted and protected. Equal protection of the law is essential to ensuring access to justice for victims of trafficking. Joining with OSCE Combating Trafficking in Human Beings (CTHB) and Council of Europe Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings to highlight the importance of non-punishment of victims, especially of child victims.
